material baking

Hi everyone, i've been trying to get lighting/materials to bake correctly, but it's not working out. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on this?

the only thing i could really find on this was at odForce about shader unwrapping: http://odforce.net/wiki/index.php/ShaderUnwrapping [odforce.net]

I'm attaching an image of a side by side comparison of the same coke can. the one on the left is before baking, and the one on the left is after baking, with the baked textures applied back to the geometry using a constant material. as you can tell, the lighting/shadows are totally different. Also, i'm attaching an image of my render settings!

any help would be much appreciated.
