Houdini Lounge » I have a question about grouping

I am working with this tutorial that I found on cmivfx a while back about breaking up geometry non uniformly. Anyway, I'm wanting to do some experimenting with it and I am trying to make 3 groups of random points that are contained within the 3 different color regions of my grid. I've attached the .hip file (houdini 8.2) so you can download it and take a look since I know nothing I'm saying makes any sense. If anyone could offer any suggestions, or if you need some clarification as to what I'm talking about, please post. Thanks
Technical Discussion » Question about deleting invalid license keys in houdini

I want to completely delete all of my current license keys and totally reinstall houdini. I tried finding a topic on this in the forum, but nothing that was specifically helpful. The reason I want to do this is because the internet connection I was on kept messing up, and I had to repair my connection everytime, which changed my IP and such, causing the license server to totally crash. Now I'm in a different place, with a very stable connection, and I want to start fresh. I've uninstalled Houdini already, so if someone could tell me or point me in a direction to show me how to clear out all of the old key entries, I'd appreciate it.

awesome, thanks so much for pointing that out, I thought maybe something like that happened, but I could not figure out what it was that I missed. As for the usefulness of this whole tutorial, I'm not QUITE sure yet, I plan on finishing it, then hopefully figuring out a use for it on a project I'm working on. It sounds potentially useful though.

Hi, I found a tutorial here [cmivfx.com] on how to move particles along Lsystems. I downloaded it, and started working on it, but I'm stuck now, no matter how many times I redo the steps up to this point, it doesn't work right. I think the mistake I made is somewhere between the 4 minute mark and the 5 minute mark on the video. I've included a copy of my current .hip file for anyone to download and look at. If someone could download this tutorial, try it out, and see what I'm doing wrong, I'd really appreciate it.
P.S. I'm using houdini 8.0.410 by the way.

Hey, I'm new to houdini, and I'm working on a particle animation. I want to show the processes behind the animation and I'm wondering how I can render out frames to display in wireframe mode. I see it done all the time, so I know there must be a way. Thanks to anyone who answers this for me. 8)

alright, I'm starting to get desperate. I still can't figure out how to randomize the vibration amount per arrow, or how to make some arrows ricochet, then hit the ground, while others stick into the ground. If anyone could look at my previous post with all of my questions, download this arrows2.hip file, and take a look at what I'm talking about, I would be SOOO grateful!

Wow, this file is great. I've figured out how to get all of my arrows to rotate on impact, and I'm very grateful for it. I was just wondering if you could show me how to modify the expression in my attribute node, the one that makes the variable LANDED, in order that the amount of frames that each arrow vibrates for is random. I read in the note that it isn't currently set to do that, but I can't figure out how to make it do that. I was also wondering if you could show me how to modify the stamped parameter in my copy1 node that causes the different arrows to vibrate at different amplitudes and frequencies. I also would like to know how to cause most of my arrows to stick, but have some arrows bounce off of the ground, and falling in disarray. I know that's a tall order, but you've been such a huge help thus far. Thanks again for the file you gave me, and I look forward to yur answer on this question.

Thank you! This is a great resource. Like I said before, I'm a beginner, so I'm having some trouble understanding some of it. My main question is, where does the variable $LANDED1 come from? Here's a very simplified version of my .hip file, could you take a look at it and either show me or tell me what I need to do to get a little shaking in my arrows? I'd be much obliged.

Ok, using the copy stamp technique, I've managed to copy the strength field in the twist node using: stamp(“..copy1”, “strength”, 0). I then added the variable strength to my stamp tab in my copy node. Currently in the value field for my strength variable, I have the expression: rand($ID)*sin($F * 50). This causes all of the arrows to go in and out of the ground repeatedly. Like I said before, I'm looking to make a few arrows out of my group to wiggle slightly, then slow to a stop, over maybe 10 or 15 frames. I feel that I'm really close and that if I can just put the right expression into the value field, I'll have it. thanks ahead of time to anyone who can help me.

Alright, I'm new to houdini, and I just finished the arrow exercise in the Magic of Houdini Book. I'm trying to take it one step further by adding an expression from the DNA bend exercise to each arrow when it hits the ground. Basically, I want a variation on the expression: “fit($FEND - $F, $FSTART, $FEND, 0, 1)”. What I want it to do is when an arrow hits the ground, have it wobble a little, and have the wobble lessen over say, 10 or 15 frames per arrow. The current expression causes an object to wobble from the first frame, to the last, and lessening slightly over time, until the end of the animation. If you are confused, I can try to explain a little better, and any help on this would be helpful.

Houdini Lounge » need info on generating geometry with particles...

I'm a beginner in Houdini, and am taking my first class on it right now. My newest assignment is to do a short animation using houdini's particle system. A lot of people are doing fire, water, smoke, and that sort of thing. I wanted to try to experiment with the geometry creating abilities with particles that houdini is supposed to have. Anyway, does anyone know of any good tutorials or some information on the subject? My current idea for my project is to have something like a tree or some vines spring up from the ground, growing and twisting and stuff.

paintHa, a fellow SCAD member. I'm taking houdini 1 right now from Bernard.
thank you. do you have any more info on , the type of course work they do?
I have basic Houdini , from Clarks class at SCAD, and will be taking Particals in Spring, before I Finish my BFA,
I wanted to know if their were any distenct features ,or benifits of one program over another.
we do a few projects here , basic modleing , and incorperating exspressions. their are a few side projects going on with useing Renderman shaders with houdini that are becoming more popular,( one of the more interesting ones incorperating pointclouds into collected data to create a scene. )
I was also interested in learning more of this in-houdini compositing system .

edwardhaha, don't ask me, I have no idea, but I'm stoked that things are working.
That's the weirdest thing. Do you know what's special about your setup? I've installed Houdini on plenty of Windows machines before in the default directory and never had to change it.

edwardYOU'RE MY HERO!!! installing it in a direcroty with no spaces worked!!! I'm so happy!
You ran the setup program as a user who had Administrator priviledges right? Make sure you're doing that. Now, uninstall 8.0.503 and re-install it again but as custom. When asked which directory to install it to use something without spaces like: c:\houdini8.0.503

Are you starting Houdini from the Start menu? This first time it runs, it should pop up a dialog. Click on the first link to install a non-commercial license.
Hmm … some more ideas. Are you running WinXP 32-bit or WinXP 64-bit edition? Make sure that in your Services, both Houdini License Client and Houdini License Server are started. Is your system clock the correct time? Did you reboot after the installation? Is your computer connected to the internet?
I am starting Houdini from the start menu, but there's no pop up to install licenses. I'm running XP 32-bit. My system clock is correct. I rebooted after install. My computer is connected to the internet.

alright, I'll try to explain my prob as best as I can. I downloaded the apprentice program and try to install it. When I try to open it, I get a fatal error message that pops up so fast, I can't read it, then the license administrator pops up with a message that says, “invalid command line option specified”. Then, the program starts, but a message pops up and says, “houdini.exe load failed: no such file or directory”. I went and check the directory, and there IS a houdini.exe.

alphatron
Greetings,
A couple weeks ago I picked up a copy of the Houdini Apprentice Edition at your Toronto office. Everything installed, licensed, and ran fine on my Windows 2000 machine. I recently upgraded to XP professional and am having problems running any of the programs. Firstly, the installer gives me a font installation error near the end of the installation.
Secondly, whenever I try to run any of the programs (Halo, Master, Select) I get multiple licensing errors and command line errors. It didn't give me the option to license for a non-commercial edition like it did when I had used it in Win 2000. I also get an error stating “cannot find houdini.exe”, but then Houdini Master will open, but upon clicking anything in the interface it will crash. I have a feeling most of the problems are stemming from the inability to license.
Please let me know what I can do to remedy this situation.
Thanks for your time,
Brad Abrahams
I'm having the same issue when I try to install mine. I can open up the program, but and error pops up that says that houdini.exe doesn't exist. I try to make some geometry, but nothing happens.
