Houdini Lounge » What’s the best holistic Houdini tutorial series out there?

I had similar thoughts recently... I watched a lot of atomic tutorials but what I think I lack right now is what you are describing as a 'holistic' tutorial series. Something that goes through all the stages of a project, from animatic to final render, with basic rigging and camera animation, lighting and takes, setting up custom passes etc...

dleeCan you post a visual example of this?
Hi. As of Houdini 20.0 karma supports 'B' (background) event in LPE so you can describe any light path to uses as custom alpha (which then you would invert in comp).
For example, if you want to consider any background hits with 0 or more transmissions, use 'CT*B'.

I think the extra Hand travel is not worth it. If you are looking for a productivity Booster get the Context sensitive hotkey System by animatrix. It's pure Gold.

Can you link to a tutorial that would showcase this pls?

Read the help cards for the creep node or the ray node.
As far as I can tell creep only works with Nurbs base surfaces, if you want something that works as expected out of the box, and ray could probably work but not with additional steps.

AizatulinThank you. I peeked at the file and had a little scare there. Will look again with a bit more courage.
If interested, here is an experimental file (trying to reimplemented some examples)

Hi,
So I'm trying to align my thinking from Max to H, and today I was looking at the new conform modifier. What would be an approach in Houdini to achieve something similar? -especially interesting being the volume preservation option.
Rather, how would you even call it in H?

Sorry, just a quick one: were the files and resources from The Dawning ever shared?
And on a side note: any good resources to pick up on good practices about setting up projects in Houdini?

this is factually incorrect, you literally wrote "there is no shading network like in Blender" and i quoted that. calling me dishonest is beyond my ability to take your contribution to discussion seriouslyImage Not Found
FYI, many studios develop their own solutions based on Houdini (one of the big ones that were announced was a whole new simulation package of additions by WETA, WetaH), as well as Unity, and UE. This does not make Houdini, nor any of those engines any less functional: it just lacked functions that were needed for production. Or are we going to have double standards now?
WetaH video:

Whatever happened to that WETA announcement? I don't even do FX work but I remember I was excited because at the time we were seeing a lot of similar announcements. I probably am wrong, but I don't think a lot of them got the traction needed...
Technical Discussion » How to sweep or loft multiple profiles along path?

Aizatulin
You can use variants for sweep. So can create a 1:1 mapping between each point of the backbone and a cross section. For example, if you have 100 points of the back bone and 3 cross sections -> section 0 ~ point 0, section 1 ~ point 50 and section 2 ~ point 100 and point 10 is 20% blend between section 0 and section 1 (and so on).
Here is an modified example
I'm not surprised that it works, not even that it has to be this complicated, only that you would have to do it this way because there is not built in function yet. Thanks!

Technical Discussion » How to sweep or loft multiple profiles along path?

Is there something in Houdini that would resemble a sweep or loft operation from other dccs where you can specify a list of profiles or cross sections and sweep them on a rail path? Eventually having the possibility of specifying at what path percentage each profile is placed or something similar?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Houdini Lounge » Looking for a Houdini breakdown / presentation
- coccosoids

Hi guys!
I'm trying to find a presentation I've seen some time ago. It was about rigging / animating a zipper in Houdini. I'm pretty sure I've actually seen it sometime and not just dreamt it but after looking for it I can find no trace of anything like it.
Does anyone remember anything remotely similar?
Thanks!

I have a strong artistic / design background, so maybe I personally also mind that native theme with strong outlines and gradients - but the other way around I don't want a circus either.
I've been using AXSC Houdini Theme [axelschoterman.com] for about four years now with a slight gamma change in in the color settings, because it's too dark otherwise. I think this makes Houdini look classic and timeless - I certainly don't need anything else for the next 10 years.Image Not FoundImage Not Found
How did you setup the gamma change?

Thanks, I can reproduce the crash.
A temporary workaround is to append a Clean Sop node just after Fast Remesh so to remove the degenerate primitives that seem to be causing the issue.
Also, be aware that you are producing self-intersecting geometry (have a look inside the geometry)
Thank you! I will have a look at how the Clean Sop can help. To be honest I've seen those intersections, and was wondering how to remove them -however I think anything that could help remove them would also maybe negate the speed gains?

Trying to use Labs Fast Remesh in a solver and it always crashes. Has anyone tried it?
