Hi all,
I am a student just about to begin my masters project in Digital Effects at Bournemouth uni. I have decided I would like to try and demolish a building, similar to the animation on the start page of the Houdini help. Does anyone know if there is any articles about the effects sequence shown in the help in Houdini or how it was done? I am assuming DOPs/POPs but some more info would be a great help as a starting point.

I have imported a tif sequence of an alpha channel of a guy running into COP's. I turned this into points using the Trace SOP and I am birthing particles from these points as the guy runs, creating a trail of particles. The particles have a short life span to create a shortish trail, as the particles trail behind i want them to expand out, so they are birthed in the shape of the guy running but as they are left behind they slowly expand outwards until they die. Does anyone know what POP can I use to get this effect? I suspect a number of approaches could be used (as ever with Houdini!) but I am getting nowhere so far by myself! Thank you kindly for any tips….. 8)

On the Vex Displacement Layered Shader can you have negative displacement? Using the normal Vex Displacement Shader i specified a minus number is the ‘height’ parameter which allowed me to do this but in the Vex Displacement Layered Shader the ‘height’ field is replaced by ‘Displacement Amount’ and if i put a negative number or positive number in that the resulting displacement always comes out positive…i.e. displacing out and not in….what gives?

I seem to have mnaged it by layering two displacement maps after the dilateerode with an over node in COP's. Is this the usual method? Cheers.

How do I layer two displacement maps? I have one which I want to use for a tarmac surface and one that I am animating via dilateerode in COP's to gradually produce cracks in the tarmac.

What would I use the trace SOP for? I've been working on it today and I've drawn a crack pattern in Photoshop and taken it into COP's. I've then keyframed the size property on a dilateerode node over four frames and used that as a negative displacement map. Was also thinking I could keyframe the magnitude of the displacement as the cracking progresses? Any other suggestions would be welcome!

Thanks, that sounds like a good solution. For creating the cracks I would use a negative displacement map you mean? I.e. set the displace amount to be a minus value so it intrudes into the geometry? What would be the easiest way of producing an animated displacement map? I would like a fractal-like pattern, so I assume I'd have to create the pattern and make it ‘grow’ accordingly?

What would be the best way of simulating a guy landing on a pavement slab (after just jumping) and producing a smallish crater where he lands and cracks eminating from that. I thought about DOP's and RBD's but isn't that more for stuff you want to specifically break apart not for simply fracturing/cracking an object?

wicked, worked like a charm. I just assumed something was wrong with the plugin as i could'nt get the environment variables to change to what is specified in the plugin install notes. Didn't occur to me that you would have to specify the sequence manually…

I don't seem to be able to import a sequence of bin files in houdini exported with realflow. I make an rfImport SOP but when i go to specify a file name to import it only lists the bin files as seperate files, not as a sequence so i can only import one file!!

Wasn't quite sure where to post this one, so thought ‘general’ would be best!
I'm doing an MA in Digtial Effects at Bournemouth uni and I am currently doing a group project to generate a medieval city for an hour long feature film shot by one of the uni lecturers.
What we hope to do is produce a ‘random city generator’ digital asset that will basically take a number of pre-modelled buildings and scatter them randomly over a designated area. I have tried to do a test and have come up with a very basic system using stamping and three low poly basic cubes of varying sizes. I have succeeded in scattering the buildings randomly over the area but I am having trouble with getting the buildings to ‘avoid’ each other, i.e. ensuring they don't intersect when the number of buildings are ramped up to show a heavily populated city.
I was thinking maybe you could use the ‘Compute nearest points’ parameter in the scatter SOP as this records the distance to the nearest next point and stores it in the ptarea attribute, but I'm not 100% sure how to ref this attribute and then how to actually use it to avoid the other buildings!

Hi All,
My apprentice version of Houdini seems stable with all aspects of the program, apart from when I render anything using Mantra. As soon as I do the Hserver crashes and Houdini freezes. I am using version 8.0.319 on win XP. Has anyone else had similar problems?

I have upgraded my copy of the aprentice edition from 7.0.123 to 8. Now however the hserver application wont work and says its the wrong version. How can I get the correct version that works with version 8 of Houdini?
