Week 4 : Light
Day 25 : Beam(s?)
"Clearly Tommy was no Catherine Zeta Jones, and he couldn't Capoeira his way either, Vincent Cassel style, through this. By the time he had reached the middle of the room, he had already tripped the alarm more than a dozen times, and at this point, the security guards, watching from the surveillance system Tommy had forgotten to disable, were gulping down donuts while betting on whether he would reach the prize before dawn."
The statues come from a free release of some Louvres statue scans from a few years ago, by Benjamin Bardou. Diane 2, 3, 4, La Seine, and Philopoemen, to be exact.
Everything else modeled during the day and allowed time. Lasers are a combination of vdbs and emissive invisible tubes.
Hope you enjoy!
edit : I wasn't sure, but yeah my calculations were correct and I'm about 1h early! thanks, Europe Daylight Saving Times.
edit 2 : day 25, not 24!

Day 24 : Fog !
"I knew the pints at the Happy Merry Maid packed a punch, but I never imagined it would knock me out so hard. Visions ! Weird ones, even. The Row darkened, invaded by some sort of old, ancient thing that... That... Is turning its gaze on .. Me? Oh god, be merciful !"
On this one, I hate myself but I used kitbash industrial buildings. The spider is from scratch, though one shouldn't look too closely to the skinning, haha.
Also it rendered way way faster than expected, which was a relief!
A bunch of smokes simulated quickly to disrupt the perfect Karma fog box effect. ( implying another Karma CPU render, folks )
Overall pretty happy how it turned out, even though one always wonder what more one could -or should- have done.

Day 23 : shadow
"Dancers at places like the Moulin Rouge are said to be "clothed only in light", but the shadows and what they hide are probably the real stars."
Model from 3D Scanstore, rendered in Karma CPU as usual. Another full LOP scene, given that manipulating lights and the "bogos" ( actually real geometry ) is so, so much easier with a fast render preview.

Day 22 : Reflect
"When a surge of exceptionnally low tides led to the discovery of an underground cave harboring a long-thought-lost treasure, searchers couldn't quite understand some of the artifacts they found there.
But boy did they party hard that night !"
More than showing a reflect(ion), I played with reflective only materials. I don't even think there is a single diffuse enabled here! Maybe on the water, which is still 95% transmissive anyway.
I wasn't quite sure of Karma limitations regarding reflections so I actually started and stayed entirely in LOP, only doing a quick sopnetwork to add decently coherent ripples thanks to the shallow water solver.
The only thing I miss are caustics, would have helped with the disco ball. AFAIK, it's not yet available in Karma?
edit : oh, the statue is a megascan asset.

Day 21 : Stage
"Romeo must die.
No, seriously! Nobody likes his pretentious clothes and so called 'acting'! "
I reaaaally should stock somewhere that Tommy skeleton I keep doing from scratch almost every time... sigh.
So everything except the anvil made in Houdini, and rendered with Karma CPU with intel denoiser. It's pretty straightforward, for once, just plain fun when everything is smooth sailing.
A few Megascan textures as usual.

Day 20 : Bulb
"What strange fruits are you bearing?"
So yeah, I forgot how painful light sources and transmission were in Karma! Unless I missed something, of course.
I went between actual instanced lightsources and instanced emissive geo, but the core of the issue was more with how lights are filtered going through a transparent surface. Someday, I'll read up on it.
Network shows a different pic because I just reverted to an older render I had already saved in the end. Denoising did a number on the waves in the submitted one, but the general intent and look was, imho, a bit better. And I liked the lighting a bit better, too.
In the one displayed in my screenshot, I was adding leaves ( a nice touch ) and getting better waves in the water ( a nice touch ) but the bulbs didn't look very nice. I prefered the "transparent with a luminous core" to the "bright opaque" kind, you know ?

Day 19 : run!
"Run little Prometheus wannabe! The fate of the coloured world rest upon your gummy shoulders!"
In theory it's everything behind him that should get coloured, but let's say it's a bubble, m'kay ?
Something a bit different from my largely contrasted / somber tones works, for once. Also something not very procedural at all, as I'm too sick to think right now. The little splash is a quick ( and dirty ) pop fluid

day 18 : tumble !
"When the rebels took the palace courtyard, they made sure to make the great statue of Justice tumble down. From that sad shell of stone and mortar, the Wings of Freedom promptly sprang forth. Morale rose high in the rebel troops."
Statue came from Scan the World, Paris, Louvres, Winged Victory / conserved Nike of Samothrace. I trust it respects the copyrights requirements here !
Wings are just a quick curve draw and an alchemy of scatter, jitter, connect adjacent, find shortest path, then re-noise a bit.
I hope it's valid for "tumble"

Day 17 : flow!
"When the goddess fell, she joined the rot she had been tasked to take care of, so many years ago. Mushrooms and rot flowers sprang from her decaying body, her bone gave birth to robust denizens of the small world, and her hair melded with the stone, turning into mold and homes for the butterflies she loved so."
Damn boys, I need to read on hair loading and rendering in Solaris. Ended up loading the raw curves up into LOPs, which doesn't sound very optimal. Since if was that or no pic... Guess the choice was made for me !
(ninja edit : better network screen )

Day 16 : crash
"The irony was not lost on the capitain of the USS Mathematics as a simple calculus mistake send them crashing on the world they had been sent to initiate first contact with a geometrically perfect, living crystal-based lifeform.
Needless to say, it wasn't a day the Federation would look upon with pride."
Phew for once I posted in time. Well I hope so !
Nothing fancy, I wanted a sharp contrastet stylised look and not do actual smoke simulations. Well there is one, just to make the big bulky shroom in the back, but that's all.

Wait, did the deadline change? Daylight saving times has started applying for you guys ?
We haven't yet switched to daylight saving times here in France ( prob Europe? ). It's due around the end of March I believe.
Obviously I had no idea and I stayed on course for 6am local time, which was midnight so far Apparently it's 1am now. :x
This really should have been much more obvious to the international community I feel.
Last year we had a period of grace where submissions where accepted until 1am. A few days I think ? Memory is bad.
I also think the delay between my local change and EDT change was shorter, like one week - placing the switch later in the month. So yeah next week I would have been careful but I thought it was still safe now

Day 12 Trees !
-- I had no idea daylight saving times started applying :x Here I was happy to finish the piece mere minutes before 6am. Apparently, it's too late.
"End of spring, the 'sakuras', the cherry trees, start blooming, even though it is, sometimes, still snowing."
Could have used a higher resolution to bring out the details a bit more, but time is what it is!
And come on, we all knew my japanese theme week couldn't avoid the cherry blossom.

Day 11 grass
"Sometimes people wonder why they don't cross path with the little Kodamas anymore... And blame the advances of technology that broke the bond between man and nature. Ah, if only they knew..."
Any and all similarities to a little guiding spirit in Nioh is pure luck.
Everything modeled by hand, a bit of kinefx rig for the little guys ( initially a pile of spheres and VDBs ), a bit of fur for the cat's tail. A couple Megascans textures as usual. Nothing fancy !
edit : just have to share the little guys and that in-cre-di-ble cat model.

"Bunraki theater is a pretty popular form of entertainment. Puppeteers used to travel the roads to make a living, telling stories like the Shortest One Ever : the Tale of the Ocean Maiden. One day ( or night ), a shrine maiden undertakes a journey across the sea only to sink when a giant wave wipes her boat."
Uhhwee. Lots of fun with this one. Everything is procedural, a few megascans textures as usual. Rest is, again, prim colors. Guest starring the Female Simple Model ! As always render with Karma, though I tend to prefer the CPU mode for now. XPU lacks reactivity, imho.
A possible inspiration for the piece could be Kubo and the Two Strings, which would explain why I felt compeled to go with a small stop motion effect with slighly out of sync elements, Akira style. Fun to experiment with this kind of little things!
( edit : woops, posted a cropped version of the network. )
( youtube curse, cont. It refuses to play in the forum browser for some reason with my Firefox. Ah well, the link works at least... )

I'll include a raw render of my original plan, just for funs. Couldn't fully setup the pagoda and create a quick'n'dirty background to hide the hdr
