Solaris + Karma may be the bigger release from SideFX in a long time from a development perspective, we have to be patient
Agreed.

H18 Indie is still rendering Karma images with watermarks in build 306.
Just letting off some steam in a funny way. I've been trying to get work done in the new H18 ethos. I've literally had about a dozen crashes and have been dealing with one frustrating issue after another with the new updates today.
Deep breath.
I have faith in my beloved wizards. I have faith in the beloved wizards.
Tomorrow is another day.
I'll be back.

Working fine here. I didn't upgrade to 440 drivers though.
That's probably the issue then. Hope SideFX releases an update soon.

As of this post, I get an error message within Karma render when attempting to utilize Optix Denoiser saying that no supported cards exist. My system has an NVidia 1080ti 11GB and an NVidia 2070 Super 8GB cards. Optix denoiser has worked in other render engines using these cards on this system.
Thought I'd pass this along in case anyone has feedback or it's a legit bug.
Windows 10 64 bit latest with latest NVidia drivers.

You could use a Python expression to handle this, if you're familiar. Basically you'd add a spare parm to your Font SOP that would point to a text file, and then create a Python expression in the “Text” parameter that would load that file and return its contents, like this:file_path = hou.pwd().parm("file_path").eval() text = "" with open(file_path, 'r') as f: text = f.read() return text
I'm attaching a little example.
Thank you! I will try this out.

Hey all. I'm trying to see if it's possible load text into the “TEXT” field of the FONT node from an external text file. I didn't see anything about parsing data in this way in the manual. I've done it in other programs but just not sure if Houdini can. Anyone have a solution for this?

I almost have tears in my eyes! I've stopped using Hindie for months now due to these limitations since clients seldom want 2k renders these days. I am utterly stunned at the news today. Thank you thank you thank you SideFX!!!!
This is definitely a huge game changer for us!

Richard Lord has a lot of great examples (+files) of making constraint setups with various kinds of “motors”

Awesome! Thank you. Looks like the servos example is exactly what I'm looking for.

Hi guys,
Trying to look into a way to create very simple rotational movement motors on objects just like you find in C4D. Has anyone tackled this before?

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Constrain a shape to multiple "string" points

Hi all,
I've been mucking around on a dynamics setup where I'm trying to achieve an accurate result of constraining selected points of a geo to multiple points on strings or wires.
Imagine taking a box and attaching two strings to two of the top corners. Then as you lengthen or shorten those strings, the box changes its orientation and position dynamically.
I've tried the wire solvers and standard RBD methods of constraints but I'm not getting the result I am looking for. I'll admit I have not done much work with wire solvers up to now. If anyone is able to offer guidance on achieving this specific result it would be helpful. Thank you!

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Boolean Shapes - Popping Edges

Hi guys,
Wondering if there's a solution to address popping edges on boolean shapes when one of the inputs is resized. To see this simply create a polygon tube with caps and duplicate it (so it retains whatever division settings you chose) and pipe the two into a boolean subtract operation. Adjust the “Radius Scale” of the second tube (the one doing the cutout). You will see how the edges pop around.
I'd like to get a boolean shape that remains adjustable with “locked” edges if that's possible. This is important because further processes coming after get rather wonky if the edges are popping around.
Thanks for any insights.

Enable the “textindex” attribute by “add text attributes” in the font node.
Append a primitive node, activate “Do transformation” and enter something likein at least one of the rotate fields.rand(@textindex) * 120 * @Time
Or do any kinds of transformations with a wrangle node based on textindex.
Fantastic. Thank you!

Not sure why it's not entirely obvious in the font node but how do we get per character transforms to work, eg per character rotation?
I see I have access to a text index in the attributes but that leads me down the ugly path of vexing to feed a transform node to operate on individual letters which is probably outlandishly convoluted lol.
Please tell me there's a simple way to get such a basic task worked out.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Node Ring Flags Missing?

I think so, but Object nodes don't have a “template” flag, so this is not a bug with the node ring. Perhaps what you're looking for is the “hide other objects/ghost other objects/show other objects” setting on the viewport? If you set that to “ghost other objects” and turn on the display flag for your particle source object you should see the particles and your Auto DOP generated geometry at the same time. I'm certain that other users will have more useful suggestions than I can provide. I was just attracted by the “node ring flags missing” title, as I know a lot about the node ring. But it sounds to me like the node ring is working just fine, it's just that Houdini doesn't do “templating” the way you expect… So I'll step away now and hopefully the experts will take over.
Thanks for the quick reply. Yes it does seem like the rings work just as they should. Actually, toggling “show all objects” in the viewport does the trick.

What node context are you in? Could you provide an image to give a little more context? Thanks.
OBJ.
Trying to template particle source in OBJ view while I work at the Auto DOP level. Otherwise I can't seem to see the particles in my scene. I have a locked plate I'm trying to work from as my master view (at OBJ level)and I need to see the particles there as I work on them inside the AD network. Hope that makes sense.

Hi everyone. I'm having a problem where the node ring on all of my nodes is incomplete. I checked the display properties for the node ring and nothing is turned off. However, I do not have the option to template any nodes for instance. Right clicking on the node and going to flags also does not show this as an option. I'm sure it's a simple fix but I hope I can get this resolved quickly as it's near impossible to do any look dev if I can't template nodes.

I like working in Vex…but for something like this I would prefer creating a CHOP network and just use different export nodes for each variance of your expression or waveforms to each X transform parameter. Much more simpler, and quicker to make changes and adjustments.
Apples…oranges…
4 lines of code in a single node with user input and a single variable to change in the code for axis desired. Just as easy to add waveform functions in one line of code with user control as well. I'm not a VEX guru by any means but it sure seems a whole lot simpler and efficient this way. These 4 lines of code were based on a node tree that took 2 parent nodes and another 7 nested to do the same thing.
Another sincere thanks to Alex for taking the time to show it and his nudge to experiment. It led to a great result I think.
It comes down to user comfort I guess. Nodes versus code. I'm adverse to code as the next guy but I'm trying to get better at VEX for reasons that this example clearly demonstrates.
The beauty of Houdini is that there's many ways to do whatever you want. Float your boat however you like.
