Mac OSX versions lower than Lion for sure only support up to GL2.1, cause that's how far apple went with OpenGL support before Lion. It's not Houdini's limitation, but the OS's.
I'm not a 100% sure if Lion supports GL3.2 though, sounds like it would.

In my use of apprentice, i've found that you can cache .sim files to an explicit cache and use them to resume a sim, the rop dop just isn't available.

With the point sop you can give the point normals random values between 0-1, this will give you boxes with initial rotations between 0-360 degrees after copy sop, I'm not sure if you were having difficulty with that.
If your doing an rbd fracture - after the connectivity sop, your prims should be given a class attribute that is unique to each object/piece, this could be used to drive the initial velocity.

I'm not sure if this is the intended way to do this, but I had similar problems and used a sopsolver w/ point sop to bring the attribute in to dops.

Does anyone use sinc 3x3? I've started to use it when doing the blurring in post. I haven't tried it with a sequence but would 3x3 get rid of the ringing or artifacts that would be present in a 2x2 sequence?

I'm not that familiar with fur, but it sounds like the attribute sop should do it for you. Try typing in “Cd” (no quotes) in the from field and “furdensity” (no quotes) in the to field. This might not work if you have your color values stored in primitives and the fur is expecting it to be stored in the points or vice versa, but the attribute promote sop could fix that.

Before copying the boxes to the curve you should have the normals as tangents to the curve. An easy way to do this is with the point sop, under the “forces” tab change “keep edge force” to “add edge force”. Then use that attribute for the point normals of the curve.
