Hi guys
I wanna get me a job as a houdini artist and I know a lot of you guys are involved in the industry.
I really really need a change so, please help me out here.
What do you guys wanna see in a demo reel?
I haven't used houdini in production so I don't have any shots I've done, I been using the apprentice for a while now, and I think I can do a lot of stuff now.
I do have a few years experience in the field, been working for about ten years doing pixels, everything from modeling, sketching, texturing, rendering, compositing, even some VFX supervising.
So what can I focus on?, make a short?, make some sample scenes?, python?, VFX? etc
thanks a lot for your help

you can use a fetch node and reference the dynamic object like this
../AutoDopNetwork:torus_object1/Position
then parent the object to the fetch
that's one way

add a new geometry node for each piece, if you duplicate it with a copy node, generate groups from that, then inside in your new geometry node import the first piece using the group and a delete to delete everything but the first node, then the second then ..
you get the idea
that's one way of doing it

Hi
This come close to what I wanted to discuss
I was listening last night at an interview Bill Roberts from Softimage about version 7 of XSI at fxguide http://www.fxguide.com/fxpodcast.html [fxguide.com]
and they did talked about ICE, houdini and multi threads.
he mentioned that houdini is not all mutli thread and THEY are, so is this true?, how much of houdini is multithreaded and what's not?
Does this means that when I'm doing a liquid in houdini of modeling animation etc, am I only using ONE core?
well, hope someone can share some info on this.
Thank you

Hi
you are right I am a Linux user 8)
I did what you told me and now the error throws this
Traceback (most recent call last):
File “<console>”, line 1, in <module>

for rule in obj.firstChild.childNodes:
AttributeError: ‘str’ object has no attribute ‘firstChild’
I think it has to do with the XML parsing, maybe a python library I need or something I do have python XML, importing the this alone gives and error
>>> import xml.dom.Node
Traceback (most recent call last):
File “<console>”, line 1, in <module>
ImportError: No module named Node
that might have something to do
weird, this is python!!
thank you again

… It's not been my corporate experience that such acquisitions tend to improve their products. Innovative new tools and work flows don't tend to come from monolithic uber corporations. Look at pixologic's Zbrush, ….
agree, most of the greatest tools comes from 2 guys in a garage

you could take a look at how the FXTOOLs is build
in your Edit operator Type Properties window, there a tab named EXTRA FILES, there you can add extra files, icons, help, etc to your OTL and reference it something like this
opdefObject/your_otl_name?icon.png
have fun
just checked the tech paper for building tools and all this is on page 18, I was sure a I read this somewhere, actually everything you'll ever need for tools is there

Hi Mark
thanks for the fast reply
I'm actually trying to do a Blinn shader like with something similar of what maya has, parameters etc, so I don't know if creating an OTL would be my best choice for that, what do you think?
Also I didn't knew about pragmas, but that's exactly what I needed for the binding.
Let me know what you think, just wanna create some simple default shaders like the ones on maya, for users to feel welcome in houdini, and I do wanna share the results.
thank again

hi
Can this be done, I wanna expose the parameters but sometimes is a mess, can I reorganize them, move them, etc, after I expose everything I need?.
or maybe create the parameters and then link them to the VEX properties?, can this be done?.
hope you guys can help
thank you

glad to know you fixed that
In the latest versions the composite extension in enabled even if not declared in the .conf file, so you have to explicitly declare it to off.
