All this is explained in ch 12 in the ‘Magic of Houdini’ book. Kudos to Will Cunningham.

Thanks, Will. I figured it out by looking at the completed project file that's in the chapter 10 folder.
I am seeing quite a few typos/grammar errors. Almost all of the time they don't affect the overall meaning, but there are some cases when I wonder how to interpret a sentence. E.g., ch. 12 - p. 291, Springs and Damping, end of first paragraph: “…with the strength of each spring being influenced
by the linear spring constant angular spring constant”. Did you mean both constants (missing “and”)? I looked in the helpcard for the Wire Object DOP and it says that both have to do with the wire strength - the first is related to stretching, the second - to bending. But I'd rather not have to make guesses on scientific subjects.
Overall, I think this book is one of the best - if not the best - software-specific CG training book I've ever purchased. Still, the next edition will benefit from more thorough proofreading, IMHO.

hi whalerider,
sorry, but it appears you have run into one of the likely many small mistakes in the text. try as we might, some still slip through. just use the soccerball.hip from the chapter 5 folder and drop a null node named dispRender at the bottom of the network chain. you should be able to proceed merrily from there. i hope you are finding it helpful even yet!
salud,
will

I downloaded the project files from the web, but don't see a project file called soccerballComplete.hip in the chapter5 folder, which is mentioned on p. 217 of the book. I only see soccerball.hip, but it is missing the dispRender node mentioned further in the text. Am I missing something?

There is a similar problem with the Null node. I posted it (for the Null) on the mailing list and got a reply from the documentation team that they'll fix it..

I get the same problem in 8.1.704 on WinXP SP2 machine, Java 5 JRE is installed and running. Was that issue fixed?

Of course. When you add an attribute with AttribCreate, Houdini creates a local variable array and maps the attribute to the array, so that you can reference the local variable later. Well, that local variable array is 1-based (when it's an array of floats). See the help for AttribCreate.
mark
Off the top of my head, I can't think of a single array that's 1 based in Houdini. The only one which might be considered 1-based would be the frame numbers. Starting at frame 1 (not frame 0). Did you ask your initial question with a particular Houdini feature in mind?

In most programming languages that are popular nowadays arrays are 0-based. If almost all arrays in Houdini are 0-based, all of them should be 0-based - there should be consistency. Unless there is a good enough reason…
markwhalerider
Why aren't all arrays 0-based? What's the reason for having 1-based arrays?
Start counting.
I bet you started with 1, not 0. But most things in Houdini are 0 based, aren't they?

Are annoyances like that going to be fixed in version 9?
I was just looking at the help for the Source POP - //houdini/content/helpcards/pop/source.html - and noticed that there are 2 entries for Impulse Activation, the second of which describes Constant Activation.

Yes, I have Java installed. It complains only for certain nodes like null, shopnet and ropnet. In most other cases it works well. Seems like it's looking for nonexisting HTML files - …/helpcards/shop/shopnet.html and …/helpcards/out/ropnet.html
In the case of null, I noticed that it's looking for …/helpcards/obj/null.html, but the actual help file is called …/helpcards/obj/obj.null.html, so I made a copy of that file and renamed it null.html
For shopnet and ropnet - i don't see anything in the /shop and /out folders that resembles their help files.

I got the following error message when trying to lookup the help on shopnet (see snapshot). That happens in both 8.1.704 and 8.1.666.

I decided not to take chances with a Dell laptop. Had one last year and liked it, but you never know. Plus, HP had better deals than Dell for the configuration I wanted.
