Weird 'Salt 'n Pepper' artifacts using Irradiance Cache

I'm trying to figure out the irradiance cache, but regardless of photon map settings, I get these weird artifacts around corners that interrupt the otherwise smooth and flawless cache.
These artifacts are reduced by like 3/4 if I turn off “Photon map stores direct lighting,” but are still there regardless.
Is this a bug, or am I using the irradiance cache incorrectly? I can't find any documents or forum posts that help, so if it's my error, please let me know!

Weird.
Turning the photon threshold to 0 solves the problem, and turning the gilight to “irradiance only” gives me only the artifacts!
Unless I'm wrong, it seems like something is going wrong when the cache is pulling irradiance()

I could be mistaken, but I believe the irradiance cache is mainly still there for backwards compatibility. I believe the preferred method is now to lay down a GI light and generate photon maps there. Again, could be mistaken though
