Instantiate Requires Cook

I've been trying to utilize HDAs as prefabs that I can instantiate from script.
Does this only work with baked assets?
Currently an instantiated HDA appears empty and requires clicking “cook” in the editor to get my geo to appear.
If there's a tutorial on this workflow that I couldn't find I'd be happy to be redirected there.
