Extreme stepping on sparse pyro sim

I have a problem with a sparse pyro simulation. I'm trying to use this method (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ui43YK0cnXE) to eliminate stepping in the sim, but even when using the velocity (or I think it's using vel)of the emitted particles, I still get extreme stepping.
