Distance shader houdini.

Hello,
I have gotten to a point where i need/want something like the Arnold distance shader in karma.

I have thought about using a divide node + distance to geo but my pc crashes when i try and get the gridsize up to what i want it to be.

is there anything i can do with shader nodes to create something similar ?
I gues having the outside geometry act like a non working lightsource and then measure the ray lengths could work Idk any ideas are welcome.
