Add geometry to an object based on a alpha texture

Is there a way to have a trace node, but it takes in geometry as an input instead of a volume 2d? Since I got some foliage assets with opacity and a cutout shader and I want to replace the cutout shader with actual geometry so it isn't needed anymore.

I already found this post https://www.sidefx.com/forum/topic/82656/ [www.sidefx.com] with a scene file, but I tried it with my assets and the transfer with trace node geometry seems to be not working that great
