If I understand your question correctly I would just write the scene out to IFD files and render those. Your main machine would calculate the particles once and then you can render on however many machines you need.

Hmm. Check that your camera matches the resolution and aspect ratio of your plate. I've seen a mismatch where the camera defaulted to 640x480 instead of the real resolution/aspect ratio. Depending on the motion of your camera it can look like the movement is off when your focal length or aspect ratio is really off.
Without the plate or the boujou export it's pretty tough for me narrow it down much more than that.

It's been years since I've worked with Boujou tracking data but I seem to remember having an issue with frame offset where boujou's track was off by 1 frame. You can try padding your playback using the following in the roto file field:
/filename`padzero(3, $F+1)`.tga
Substitute your path to the background image and the filename prefix for filename. Sub your file extension for tga. “3” is the number of digits in your frame numbering extension. “$F+1” tells Houdini to play the image back 1 frame early so in this example Houdini's frame 2 will match up to filename001.tga. Make sense?

I had put together a quick tutorial for importing syntheyes data a while back that included a section on setting up a background image for roto. It's for Houdini v10 but the process is the same in v11. One of these days I really should upload it to vimeo. For the time being you can find it here:

Thanks for the followup Peter. I was thinking of picking up a couple of those 1090t's for rendering. It's nice to know that the performance is pretty much identical to my Opteron machine.

No problem, the mailing list archive is under the “community” menu at the top of this page and is called “Mail Archive.” It's searchable or you can just browse starting at the most recent post. It's good if you're trying to do something specific and need some direction.

It took me a couple of tries before I got it.
My first time around was on v8 and I just didn't get it and ended up giving up. I came back to Houdini at version 9 and between 3D Buzz, CMI and browsing the Houdini mailing list archives I was able to figure things out. It took about a year before it clicked.
Searching and browsing the mailing list archives was probably the key for me.

Dual Opteron 2376, ATI FirePro v3750, Windows 7 64bit here.
I don't experience issues with slow response. Are you on the latest Houdini build and ATI drivers? The only issues that I have experienced in the current production build (10.0.554) are with HueCurve COP using GPU acceleration and also some instability with the Trace SOP.

I'm a nodelocked Escape user and have no problem rendering over the network from the command line. I'm pretty sure the render tokens are by core, tokens are unlimited with a commercial license but you do need to request them. I asked for 20 when ordered my Escape license I use a total of 12 on various machines around here.

Tutorial has been uploaded. I was in a hurry when this was recorded a while back and there is an error at 2:10, I say “attribute” when I really mean “parameter” other than that you should be all set. File is about 30MB and can be downloaded here:
