Technical Discussion » Tearing Wire holding together RBD chains...

Hey guys,

I was hoping one of you ninjas could enlighten me a little about the apply relationship dop or the best possible method for the following effect.

I have a task at the moment which requires me to create a string holding together two chains pulling apart in opposite directions.

The chains are animated with spring constraints and so far that works fine.

However I am trying to create the string which is holding the two chains together and I'm stumped trying to use a wire solver to achieve this.

I've had a look at this http://ihoudini.blogspot.co.uk/2011/10/snapping-wires.html [ihoudini.blogspot.co.uk] and this http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewtopic&t=23062&highlight=snapping+wires [sidefx.com]

but I am still a little too unfamiliar with some of the techniques required to achieve this.

Ideally the individual strands of the string will tear under the pressure of the pulling chains and eventually snap, releasing the chains.

Any ideas or advice very much welcome…

Thanks

P.s. Attached a hip file with my current explorations..

Hi guys,

I have been using H11 Apprentice HD for the last year and I wanted to test H12, but after installing the basic apprentice version (12.1.077) when I load up either Houdini or Houdini FX on the right shelf bar all I have is Lights & Fur. Where did all the other shelves disappear to?

Do I need to uninstall H11 for H12 to work? Is it a build issue?

Thanks for any help.

To answer my own question I just installed the most recent build of Houdini 11 and Mountain Lion had no problems starting up and running correctly.

I'll see if there is any issues with Help.

Hi,

i'm running Houdini 11 Apprentice HD and I have installed X11 but I am still getting an immediate crash after I start the program. It starts the load screen and after a little while pops up with a autosave file report in /tmp.

Any other possible solutions for that? Or do I need H12?

I also upgraded to Mountain Lion in 10 days before my Masters thesis deadline… ops:

Thanks,

Billy.

Technical Discussion » Nasty Spiky artefacts on displacement texture?

Hey guys,

has anyone encountered an issue like this where spiky artefacts are being rendered surfaces on with displacement?

The shader is displacing on shards from a fracture. In addition, the geometry is being fused cause otherwise the edges do not appear connected.

I haven't been able to find a solution to clean this up yet. I have tried increasing the pixel samples, displacement bounds, shading quality, ray tracing quality, bias's, and dicing.

Thanks in advance for any tips guys!!
