You need to use a point SOP with “Add Normal.”
That will allow you to input custom normals.
None of your extrudes are working for me in your file, not sure why.
Check out the tangent SOP on the exchange as well. That will help you with orienting your curve normals.

Peter Quint on Vimeo.
Watch all of them!
Read “The Magic of Houdini” Its for Houdini 8, but is more or less the same now.
Then watch the SideFX tutorials.
Watch the Gnomon Workshop DVD with Craig Zerouni
Then watch the 3d buzz, and cmivfx stuff.
I suppose digital tutors stuff can be good for introductory things, but I would suggest the Peter Quint tutorials over them.
And most importantly, experiment!

You can group by connectivity, and do it that way.
You can also select a face and grow your selection by pressing Shift+G. While you have that selected you can press tab over the 3d viewport and type in “material.” That will allow you to apply a material to that section.
Connectivity is probably easier, but other options are always nice.

You might get good results if you:
Create a fluid simulation using the pyro or smoke solver.
Advect particles through the simulation.
Surface the particles with the particle fluid surface SOP.

Technical Discussion » how to use RBD solver with emitted particles?

You can use an RBD point object.
First create a pop net and add a source POP.
Attach a kill POP after the source pop.
Go into DOPs and add an rbd point object.
From there, use your pop net as the points in the rbd point object.
Then override the geometry in the rbd point object to use any geometry in /obj
Should be working fine.
You can lower your volume samples if you are using volume based collision detection to speed up the sim.
Hope this helps,
Jason

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » NEED GUIDANCE: Creating the growth of cotton fibers

I am trying to create the growth of cotton fibers to be integrated with live action footage…
The fibers will start from a very small piece of cotton and grow into various objects like chairs lights etc.
How would I go about achieving this effect?
I am a houdini maya and realflow user.
Any guidance is much appreciated.
oh also, i want to avoid using sprites.
