Thanks for hurricane response ! ))
It seems nobody understood my issue. Ok i will try again:
1. Look to attached scene.
2. There a simple setup, but i can't get it worked.
I need. See material overrides in the viewport. I can send Point Color attribute to GLSL shader and i see it works. But i can't properly send “map” or “texture” point attribute to GLSL shader.
How i can do that ?

Hi all,
How can i instance GLSL material parameters with “copy SOP” ?
For example:
I can instance “Cd” or “Alpha” or “scale” or “pscale” attribute. But i can't link random textures in one material.
I can do this but i see changes only when render with Mantra. But i don't see this in viewport.
I mean GLSL shader parameter - when i use “Override use local variables” then i choose “base texture map” or “ogl_tex1” - but nothing happened in viewport. Only when i render with mantra - i can see different textures on copies. But not in viewport.
This is not implemented in Houdini ? Or i don't know some hints? I have trying many shaders and i have to try many of ready Houdini shaders - i see same effect…
Thanks for answers..

Shame.
http://localhost:48626/io/formats/image_formats [localhost]
Using .rat files is faster for texture mapping, and typically consumes less memory than other formats because portions of the map are flushed out if more data is required for rendering. Only the portions of the map required for rendering are loaded. By default, mantra allocates a maximum of 8 MB of RAM for rat files. you can specify the maximum amount of ram (in MB) used for texturing with the environment variable SESI_RAT_USAGE. For example setenv SESI_RAT_USAGE 32.
We recommend using .rat files for texture maps before any other format because the quality tends to be much better than using stochastic sampling.
thanks to docs.)))
but for apprentice - is a .picnc, .ratnc
Non-commercial versions of pic and rat formats saved by Houdini Apprentice. Cannot be used by regular Houdini.

Hi friends.
I have some questions.
1. What texture image format is best for PBR rendering (TIF, JPEG,RAT)? Can some formats (for example JPG) - slowdown PBR render ?
in another words: What textures format (resolution, size) is faster ? For example when i have 10 textures in scene - this is not a question. I can use any format. But if i have 40-50 and all textures Hi-Resolution ? What optimization steps can i do?
Thanks for answers

Pagefan, 10.3 is more stable, and, as i`m hear, 11.1 have some compatibility troubles with other software…
I`m use 11.1 and really happy
But two my friends, who use XSI, can`t run XSI on 11 and can`t find any workarounds (“oops..”).
But you right - 11.1 is really faster in many things. Very clean and nice distributive.

this is a nice question.. i`m not have enough time for experiments, but very interested about mosix cluster project.
http://www.mosix.org/ [mosix.org]
this cluster grid make possible multicomputer calculations for most programs. I`m stick on patched kernel hangs, and can`t find workaround..
This interesting question. May be somebody find another cluster engine.

am using fedora core 10. not 5.I`m not sure.. But Fedora-Core 10 is a not good idea… In Fedora-cores the *Last release version* is not mean *The most Good version*..
If you want to use Fedore-Core and get some stability, you need version 8.. Versions higher then 8 - extremely unstable.. and i`m afraid - not usable..
You need to download FC8-x64 DVD, then use command “yum update” - and then, after tons updates, you can use this..
how is opensuse? particularly houdini on opensuse.openSUSE is great.. After long time using FC i feel myself highly comfortable. I recommend you download openSUSE 10.3 DVD, if you want to try.. Houdini work on Linux really faster and cleanly, than on Windows. I`m not frequently using it (i`m apprentice user - just very want to learn and try various insane tasks, interesting for me ), but for me is true - houdini is better on linux.
i tried adding python path in the hmaster file, but still it says python lib not found
Look please to my theme about this on this forum:
http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewtopic&t=12538&highlight=fedora [sidefx.com]
I`m solve python problems by setting right environment variables..
setenv PYTHONPATH $HH/scripts/pythonlibs
try to set in command line this:
cd (your houdii dir)
source houdini_setup_bash
export PYTHONPATH=$HH/scripts/pythonlibs
houdini
You get python from houdini libraries.
houdini is working fine except for icons
I`m don`t know what is But this is a tragedy.. Icons must be.. I`m never get this error… Don`t know how i can help.

3. About lost icons.. Hodini icons in “png” format now (how i know). But i don`t know - Houdini depend from system image formats libraries or not.. In any case may be you need to install libpng or pnglibs or something like this…
4. One question.. May be i`m not correct… Can i ask you - why fedora-core 5 ? I`m use fedora-core - six years, from version 2 to version 9 and now i erase it and really happy with openSUSE 11.1.
Really Happy.

If you want to make good dynamics, you must learn Houdini first…
Houdini is hard to learn after long time Maya using - this is my case But for Effects creation - houdini is the best tool.
I work in studio with Maya users. And i`m must work on Maya too, every day . But this is pain, because i feel - “This very stupid… This really stupid.. This slow..In Houdini i can do this in 10..20 times faster…”
I work in maya, only because all user around me work in maya.
Houdini give you the full control of FX process.
1. Look video tutorials on site and PDF for old Houdini versions.
2. Documentation - of course.
3. Look to site gallery, look to films - for inspiration.
4. Make little effects, and try to made full process pipeline with rendering and composing.

I STRONGLY disagree that SideFX lets users control the development of the software as live_fx seems to suggest.
I mean the working process.
Not the package development.

Can any of you explain that one? Are Houdini artists more scientifically/analytically astute than a Maya artist perchance?
I think.. Houdini users just want to have the full control of process.
Instead of other, who controlled by package possibilities..

something I should have included (something like ‘how many licences does your organisation hold’)
Houdini provide the Apprentice licensing. This great for learning. ANYone can take free license and play with all Houdini features. And if you are “apprentice” user, you can send the bug reports direct to support, and receive the very fast feedback from support team. And you can see all changes in “tomorrow build” for windows, linux (32 and 64 bit), Mac OS X.
Houdini have a gold support, instead of many other packages. All users can send reports and see fixes in “tomorrow” builds.
You must include the question about support the “non commercial” users.
Houdini have this option.
p.s. Our studio have the “ancient M*ya” licenses. I`m remember some deadlines and silent from AD support, and feedback was received 2 weeks later.

Very fun.
But again start thinking about my choice - 3D graphics.
I think this choice, some years ago, was some wrong (i don`t know how said in english about “stupid+smile+quick” - some like small boy,who going in bears hole with wood gun).
The percent of insanely in this industry, is extremely high.

Do I get thes same path convention with UNC and NFS. (I quess with samba it won't work on linux).
Could you recommend any good starter for setting up NFS shares?
I`m use some trick, but in some cases it not work. This simple.
Windows - Linux.
1. For example, you have a shared folder named \\winserver\share You must create smb mountpoint on linux: mount -t cifs //winserver/share /mnt/smb/winserver/share. (must be exist)
2. Next, you must link this point to your “/” filesystem. Another words - make symbolic link
ln -s /mnt/smb/winserver/share /
(of course, you must be root to do this)
3. Now you can use f**k*d Microsoft UNC path`s in linux box. Another words - write UNC path in Linux programms, and in Houdini, of course.
4. This work in Mac OS X also. (may be someone know more simple way?)
Linux - Windows.
1. Make samba share.
2. make this dir (not samba share, of course) “ln -s” to / dir.
3. Use it with “//linuxserver/share” in Houdini (i don`t sure, but must work). Nuke and Maya understand this.
Good luck.
