I was looking into the new pyro nodes, both in SOPs and DOPs, both with sparsity.
The old pyro solver had a combustion tab, where if you had temperature and fuel it would, well, combust.
How is the workflow with the new ones?
The growing effect uses the burn field somehow, is this how it is supposed to be done now?

Like Midphase said.. the OS is part of my consideration.
I grew up with windows, then switched to a mac in 2007 and never looked back until Apple made me.
And long story short I just feel way more comfortable on a mac than I ever did on windows.
As for the Houdini on Linux part:
what would be the distribution to go?
how is the situation with drivers, amd/ryzen/threadripper, redshift and nvidia over there?

In your first post you say that you would like to move back to a Mac, are you currently using a Windows or Linux workstation?
Yes, moved to a used windows 10 HP Z620 Workstation when it became clear they wouldn't do anything with the trashcan and the iMac wasn't powerful enough (at that time). I wanted lots of cores for rendering and enough room for a beefy Nvidia GPU.
I considered a used Mac Pro 5,1 but the situation with nvidia made me decide against it.
Now this all seems to change with Metal but I guess I will need to hold out a while. Won't be an early adopter. Will build myself a decend ryzen machine and probably revisit the back to the mac idea in about a year or so when the direction and capabilities are more clear…

I only saw Karma inside of Solaris, but I guess it is, like mantra, available as a renderer in the standard Houdini OUT context?

…things moving to Vulkan which then runs on top of Metal or DX.
This is one of my concerns exactly… because wouldn't this mean being slower on a mac,Vulkan has to run on top of metal, or is it the same on windows? Has this to run on top of DX as well? I thought windows supported Vulkan directly?

just watched the H18 presentation which is an amazing release
was hoping they would mention something about the whole going forward on the Mac thing.
guess it's still wait and see.. thing is I only have a couple of months left until I need to decide which way to go

Hello everyone.
To get straight to the point: I will need a new workstation in the next 6 months and I would like to move back to a Mac (pro).
I mainly use Cinema 4D and Houdini with Redshift.
C4D and Houdini both run on a Mac.
Redshift is being ported to Metal.
When Apple presented the Mac Pro they showed slides with software vendors fully supporting the mac Pro and SideFX was one of them.
But what does that mean long term?
Houdini already runs on macs.
So for me the questions on the Houdini side of things are:
to sum it all up “is the mac pro worth the investment?”

solidify is ophidden and marked as experimental so not sure if it's safe to use for production
you can runin the textport to expose itopunhide Sop solidify::2.0
or directly add it using opadd command
Thank you!

Hi everyone,
I searched for a quick way to get a watertight model and found this node in the online Documentation of Houdini 17.5 [www.sidefx.com]
BUT it isn't in the softwares most recent version nor in it's documentation.
Does anyone know if it's a feature/node still to come in the future?

I am thinking about switching to linux I wanted to ask you guys to share your experiences with houdini on linux.
Which distributions you use etc.
I found a tutorial on Gumroad “Linux Mint for VFX” [gumroad.com] which uses Linux Mint. A friend of mine uses CentOS. I also heard Ubuntu is quit solid.
Would really appreciate any information / opinion on which way to go.
Thanks!

Hi everyone.
As far as I am aware arnold renderer should work with houdini indie.
I installed it but it doesn't show up.
It is the correct version for Houdini.
Any insights if this is because of Indie or something else would be much appreciated!
thanks

Technical Discussion » Vellum inflate over time

I cannot figure this one out.
It is possible to inflate an object by setting rest scale up in the constraint settings.
But this only works once and very quickly dependent on the dampening.
What I wanna do is something like this, after like a second or inflate, deflate, re-inflate

Thanks! I can't share the actual car crash hip since its incredibly disorganized and would never run without the actual car geo, which I can't distribute, but I will attach a quick file using the point deform with RBD soft constraints. I hope this helps!
thanks for the file!
I was adapting it trying to break the soft constraints which worked ok
But now I an struggling on how to point deform based on that simulation.
Is this even possible in a dynamic way or would I have to define chunks that are broken before hand?
Technical Discussion » How to use the new Volume Source SOP to add velocity into Flip Solver?

I got it working.
The only thing that I overlooked was when creating my vector volume it creates 3 volumes (vel.x, vel.y, vel.z) and flip doesn't read those.
After converting to vdb and using a merge vector node it went down to one volume and everything worked.

I have a 1080ti which should do quite well with opencl.
It is set up as the opencl device in the preferences.
However, using flip Solver or a pyro solver, turning on opencl, running a sim and watching both cpu and gpu usage only the cpu gets stressed to almost it's maximum. The GPU Load (on GUP-Z) stays at under 2% so basically does nothing.
My system is a HP Z 620
Dual Xeon 8 core CPUs (E5-2670)
Three GPUs
Windows 10 Pro 1809
NVIDIA Driver is 416.94 and it recognizes all GPUs just fine.

I have multiple gpus installed and found a forum post on vfxarabia [www.vfxarabia.co] where the user sets the opencl environment variable to “HOUDINI_OCL_DEVICENUMBER = 1”
Now in the preferences it is possible to do exactly this via visual selection.
BUT
The reason he does this is so that he can use his main Card for OpenCL acceleration and the weaker card for OpenGL viewport display.
My question now is does anyone know how I can set the OpenGL to use a specific card?
I tried setting “HOUDINI_OGL_DEVICENUMBER = 1” but it doesn't seem to have an effect.
