Thanks for the reply. That is a good idea, but would I be able to selectively render objects/nodes from my scene using that method? If so, how do I do that within the mantra node? Or do I need to create separate scene files for each part that is to be rendered?
Thanks,
Adnan

Thanks for the reply. I was able to open the queue monitor via the web browser thanks to your help.
Jobs were not rendering because Hqueue can't render takes.
It seems, despite the FAQ, there are things that are difficult to figure out regarding Hqueue, so I made a little page with some info as I explore further.

I'm experimenting with Houdini takes and have created several to render. I have one hop file with several objects. Each Take I created has different objects set to render and others off. The other difference is just the output path.
2 questions on this:
1. What is the easiest way to render all of these takes out one after another on a single machine?
2. Is there any easier way, other than creating Takes, to output each of these objects to separate paths?
Thanks,
Adnan

Hi,
I was able to install the HQueue client and server and get them up and running. I added the hq_render node after a mantra render node, then clicked ‘Submit Job’. The job seems to submit fine as I see a dialog that says "Your job has been submitted (Job 29). <Open HQueue> <Ok>.
Clicking <OK> closes the dialog. Clicking <Open Hqueue> and get a no apps installed to run localhost.
So, I don't know how to get the jobs to start rendering, nor do I know how to see the jobs in the queue. I have looked at the documentation for HQueue, but did not see anything that seemed to solve this.
Thanks,
Adnan

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » texture map channel in material

I was looking for an answer to this question as well. I found that you can add a vector4 to float node to the texture map node output. This gives you the rgba channels as output. The 4th output on the vector4 to float is the alpha. Plug this into nodes for opacity.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » material render issue, view vs shell

Hi,
I'm having an issue rendering certain materials. I am new to Houdini.
Everything renders fine in the render viewport. When I render through the python shell, several objects do not render or they render very dark. I seem to have narrowed it down to any custom material not rendering. Does that mean it can't find the material? I don't see any errors pop up.
Attached is a sample file where the volume renders locally, but not in the python shell, or at least not correctly.
python code:
node=hou.node(“/out/mantra_preview”)
node.render(frame_range1,1),verbose=True)
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Adnan

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » mantra: Unable to load texture

Hi,
using Houdini apprentice and now testing with Houdini Indie, I get the following render error in the Houdini Console:
mantra:Unable to load texture
It is looking for this texture: billowy_smoke_shader.png in the folder that the current hip file is located.
I could not find where this texture is being used and don't know if it actually exists anywhere. So I searched online for a way to find texture references and found this command:
hou.fileReferences()
I ran that in a Python Shell and ran a search in the output for this filename, but it is not there.
Any ideas? This is causing issues where it renders if I render a single frame, but if I render a sequence, all the volumes do not render, just the particles.
Thanks,
Adnan

When rendering some volumes (vdb created with cloud node), I get some flat parts along some of the outer edges. I'm guessing the bounding box is not big enough. Which settings should I adjust to fix this?

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » flipbook first 100 frames incorrect
- madguru

Hi,
I am creating flipbooks to preview my animation. When I render them out, the first 100 or so frames are incorrect. I see the animation playback fine in the viewport, but the flipbook shows a number of frames, say 1 to 10, then repeats 1 to 10 again several times until we hit 101 or so.
Any idea why flipbooks would render incorrectly like that? This is happening in multiple scene files.
Thanks,
Adnan

Thanks so much for the reply! I've been playing around with the file and found that I can plug in custom geo as the source object and plug it also into the group node so that inner and outer groups are created based on that. It seems to work quite well.
The only thing I would like to do is somehow fade the density from outer to inner so that all the outer points gradually fade out instead of having a single density value. It seems that attribute transfer would help with this, but I a uncertain how to set it up.

Hi,
I am learning about Houdini volumes. I created a cloud FX and added a Volume Feather node, but I am not sure how to make it fade the edges of my volume.
I assumed that the group should be set to 0, but there does not seem to be any effect. Any thoughts?
Is there some other way to fade the edges of a volume? I want the edges to fade into the background.
Thanks,
Adnan
