Hi there!

Do radeon cards work as good as nvidia consumer cards on windows, now? Or is nvidia still the better choice for houdini?

Cheers,

Not for Houdini in particular but someone here in the office was using an AMD card full time (for almost a year?) on Windows and would get blue screens in the video driver from just doing innocuous things.

In my testing, AMD and NVIDIA workstation cards perform equally well. Everyone once and a well, either manufacturer could come out with a driver that has issues with Houdini but they generally deal with it pretty quickly.

This is for workstation drivers - consumer drivers often take much longer to be patched.

Consumer GPU drivers are continually being optimized and fixed for the latest AAA game title, which can lead to more regressions. If you use a consumer GPU, be wary of updating your driver, and be prepared to roll it back.

Thanks guys, I'm aware that consumer cards are a game of chance with houdini. To be more precise, what card would you buy if you could not afford a pro card in terms of driver stability…

In the past I was under the impression that (concerning houdini) ati consumer drivers are less reliable than nvidia's. Would you affirm that?

For consumer cards, I'd go with Nvidia. AMD's consumer GL driver seems to have its good months and its bad months.
