There was some work done in MaterialX to improve the spec definitions of Lama nodes. Lama has always been very tightly coupled with RenderMan, and this work was meant to generalize it.

EDIT: However there is still a lot of disparity between MtlX Lama and RenderMan Lama, which means that H21 may not fully support them yet.

Does anyone know whether the upcoming major Houdini release will include full MaterialX Lama integration in Karma? RenderMan already handles Lama seamlessly in Solaris, and I’d like to keep the same look-dev graphs without falling back to standard MaterialX when I switch delegates.

If anyone from SideFX can share whether complete Lama features are on the roadmap, I’d really appreciate it.

The only bidirectional capable path tracer for houdini that comes to mind is Renderman.

Thank you for the clarification! That makes sense. I’m using Karma for my current project, so I was curious about its capabilities. I’ll keep RenderMan in mind when I need bi-directional path tracing.
