My guess is that when the Vulkan engine can be added to karma as a backend(i think they are on it).
With a sold Vulkan Engine you could support AMD, Intel GPU's in one go. Apple Metal over MoltonVK.

As mike noted they go from 21 -> 22. History wise they have done that multiple times. Last time it was +10 years ago.

A FPGA implementation is nice but to bring it to silicon and make it in volume takes time.
