This tutorial shows the power and customizability of procedural setups in Houdini demonstrated on a simple object - an elevator gate. Students will explore the basics of procedural modeling and explore how to use math + vex code to create a simple animation.

Damian Thorn-Hauswirth has worked professionally in various capacities in the animation industry for over a decade. He returned to the University of Central Florida in 2019 to obtain an MFA in Animation and Visual Effects in order to teach. His virtual reality thesis production, Castle of Unknowing, went on to become a semi-finalist at the student Academy Awards and premiered at the Ottawa International Animation Festival. Exemplified by this production, he hopes to create art which challenges concrete and routine perception, arousing a sense of questioning and mystery within the viewer. Damian recently moved from Florida to the Poconos to serve as assistant professor of animation at East Stroudsburg University. He seeks to teach future creatives about the variety of potentials of animation, inspiring both artistic expression and technical expertise.
