Has anyone tried using the "Soft Transform" SOP ?
It either works in a mysterious way, or it's broken. Because when I move the transform gizmo after adjusting the Pivot, the transforms are completely off.
sometimes the transform seems to "normalize" after rotating the selected components a bit, but after resetting the rotations the transforms are off again.

Yeah, right, you're right. If you reset the pivot, the pivot moves somewhere. It's 100% a bug, I think.
I remember a similar problem with pivot in transform, which drove me crazy when I was first learning.
The catch was that you also have a pre-transform tab. And when you first move, then change the pivot, and then reset it, the values move to the pre-transform. But you don't realize it, and the tab is always closed, driving you crazy with the incomprehensible screen. So then I started opening all the tabs and watching what was happening with the pivot and pre-transform, resetting them as needed. I even set the default setting to have all tabs open to prevent such tricks. And the problem went away, although it was a real pain. But softtransform doesn't have a pretransform, so it looks like the values are moved to an invisible pretransform and continue to be used in calculations.
I think softtransform has code from transform underneath the hood and also operates with pretransform, but we don't have it in the interface, and we can't fix it, so for us, it's a pure bug.
I suggest filing a bug report.
