I'm interested as well. Actually would be nice to see some serious examples bundled with software, because at the moment i'm just trying to start from another end, learning how all those fields/advections/math/etc works, instead of trying artistic side of H12.
Question to devs: is it possible to post some serious scenes, for example aforementioned volcano source scene? I mean, i don't see why not.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » Apprentice HD docs link not working

for me it's http://localhost:48626 [localhost]
Actually i found that online documentation ( http://www.sidefx.com/docs/houdini12.0/ [sidefx.com] ) is much better, because when H12 crashes you losing all your open pages/connection to built-in server.
There's couple of problems with online docs tho, including completely not working google search and missed images/section, esp. for new features.
Still, prefer to have 20 persistent tabs opened in chrome/ffox.

Houdini Indie and Apprentice » nVidia driver crash on dense grid sims with OpenCL?

It's definitely faster on GPU, maybe speed is below my expectations, but as jfait explained in a separate post, it's because of the way things organized for complex sims/pyro fx. But yes, it's faster, on my rough estimate by 10%-100% depending on setup, compared to cpu.
Althought i'm going to stick to cpu version as well, because OS driver crash is not what you're looking for, especially taking into account houdini just disappears after restore.

I have a friend with some old quadro on notebook, he tested it yesterday and it seems it's perfectly stable on it, but on geforce 580 and 470 using opencl imminently leads to driver crash/restore sequence in few minutes.

Is anyone experiencing random nVidia driver crash when using OpenCL acceleration? For me it's like 95% probability of crash if il simulating like 50 or 60 frames even on not so dense grids.

So i'm trying to get more detailed smoke by using very small grid cell size(is it right way to go btw?), and eventually H12 crashes my nVidia drivers and H12 in turn. Is it normal behaviour?
I'm on Windows7 x64, geforce gtx 580 with 1.5gb mem.
PS: bug is 100% repeatable. I don't have other machines to test it, but it crashes almost every time for me.

swann: seems that your scene is exactly what i want, but i'm still don't understand how it works - help description for copy stamping is a bit vague.

kuba: i think we will have the same problem here - dynamic solver gonna count equally colored objects on different floors as a single object.
mawi: thanks for examples, but i think single sphere not gonna work here. Imagine, there's merge of 4 sphere with different group names fed into copy sop, and somehow not only geometry, but also groups have to be copied by copy sop. Workaround is to recreate all those groups again in copy sop result, but the problem is that houdini counts the sides and caps of shattered pieces as a separate objects.
example scene attached.

I'm trying to copy some geometry(say, pre-built floor of the building) with Copy SOP for further demolition with RBD, and ran into a problem with grouping: Copy SOP actually does not copies all the groups from the source for each copy, it just adds all the copied primitives into the same groups, making DOPs think, that, say, all the tables on all the floors is a single object, which is obviously not what i want.
Is there any way to copy all the groups together with geometry?

This is exactly the method i've used. I can pick primGroups, but how to get their _names_ after it? When i'm attaching “group” SOP to selection i've made, Group SOP consists only of point ranges, not group names.
This is the exactly the problem.

First of all - thank you for answers, guys.
Let's see:
I think it will be not that slow to unroll constructions like aaa, and very handy for users. Does SideFx guys reading this board? Is it possible to add this in future releases? I think it's quite logical to have such a patterns?
Let's see:
For some reason i've got my Houdini help with no search feature working….I've tried this, but still no luck - still has no search in help. The version i used is “jre-1_5_0_06-windows-i586-p.exe”
it might be lack of Java in proper version
For question #2….On the link you provided there's only one line about patterns for groups, and it's not informative at all.
The combine supports basic pattern matching…
Like aaa_ would be the same thing as aaa_10 to aaa_29. ? and * also work.

For question #1….It simply doesn't work for me. I mean - i see all the groups in this list, but when i'm trying to select some of these, nothing changes in viewport, so i can't see where particular selected group located.
Try out the group select tools at the top of the viewport.

You can install Total Commander and use ext2fs plug-in for it, which allows to read linux partitions right from windows. Also i've heard something about ext2 filesystem driver for windows, but i'm not sure about last.

For some reason i've got my Houdini help with no search feature working, and although i''ve tried to read it, didn't found some answers:
1. Suppose, i've got imported obj with primGroups aaa1-aaa50. I'd like to select interactively some of these, and delete. I'm able to do it with select tool, and by appending Group sop next to it, but in this case, group node contains point ranges, not primGroup names. Is it possible somehow to get names of primitive groups selected with select tool?
2. in Group node, combine tab, i can type in names of the groups i'd like to combine into single one. What format should i use, to, for example, combine first 20 groups? I've tried aaa, aaa, but it doesnt works. Typing “aaa1 aaa2 aaa3 aaa4…” is stupid and there should be some more elegant method. Anyone?
Also, why Group node doesn't cleanup groups i've just combined? Is there any way to do this? Maybe i should use “delete” field in next tab?

It's much like macros creation in Shake…i think you can use subnetwork, but you can't(?) pull out required controls out of this network i think.
This feature would be very good.

Hehe, i know the solution.
You have used built-in WinXP dual monitor support, which is works exactly as you described it. But thing you need is native nVidia support, which can be turned on in “GeForce bla-bla-bla/nView display mode” tab, not in the “monitor” one. Try it

Is there any way to place few objects on a curve with equal distances one from another? I tested it yesterday:
1. Drew NURBS curve with 5 CV's to form it
2. Resample SOP with 10 points
3. Box SOP
4. Copy SOP with curve and box plugged in.
Well, i've got a curve with boxes on it. But these boxes wasn't aligned with curve. I tried to add Point SOP with “Add Normal” option, but no luck. Any ideas?
