I am trying to complete this tutorial http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=486&Itemid=166 [sidefx.com] It was created for Houdini ver 8. I am very new to Houdini and have got hung up on this step?

2. CREATE A SPARE “VECTORING” PARAMETER
Press the menu icon with the tiny + and the tiny fields below it to
create spare parameters. You should get the Add Spare Parameter dialogue.

For the Channel name, type vectoring and for the Label use
Vectoring. Set the Range from -5 to 5 and leave the Default
to 0. Click on the Add button.

Now you should be in the Spare folder for the add_point_normals
Point SOP. Set the value to 0.5

There is no + menu? There is a gear symbol that will allow you to open the Parameter interface but it doesn't follow with the instructions above? Please any help with this step would be greatly appreciated.

Choosing Edit Parameter Interface from the gear menu will allow you to add spare parms, it's the same thing. You just drag over whatever data type you want and set up the defaults in the right pane
