I haven't found a better method yet, but I did find that saving as .bego.sc including adding the frame counter (usdconfigure) as mentioned in the .hip examples provided (thank you!), it still runs out of ram for large animated sequences of geometry. No savings there.
So in the rop geometry node, instead of saving as .bgeo.sc, I replaced it with the USD Export node, making sure to toggle on the "Flush Data After Each Frame" param. That's where I got my ram savings. Slower sure, and larger file size as mentioned here and in other forums, but at least negotiable for a farm. (be sure to up the links and paths to the usd nodes not the .begeo.sc

Excellent work. And I'm getting extended enjoyment listening to CCR Woodstock live (YouTube) and watching your rather excellent caricature animation. Just seems right the right kind of white chick to be dancing to CCR at 3am (when they had to go to play). Hysterical.

Technical Discussion » Getting mplay to work in the folder context menu - windows 7

I am trying to get “mplay” to work in my folder context menu for windows 7. That is to say, in explorer, when I RMB (Click) over a given folder with images in it, I would like to be able to select “Mplay”.
I was able to do this with RV software (from tweak) by adding a register key in regedit
-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell
-Create a Key; Rename it: Rv
-Then, add another key under your new Key; Rename it command
-On the right side of the Registry double click and add the full path to the string: “C:\Program Files\Tweak\RV-3.12.17-64\bin\rv.exe” “%1”
Done.
But in mplay it fails. Doesn't seem to recognize the files inside the folder. I am hoping that someone could provide me with the solution?
Many thanks!

love the new solver but is there any way to get continuous emission for something like ten frames and then stop emitting? Just like the emit particles solver? Same thing for the particle fluid solver… wanting continuous emission.
Houdini Lounge » add velocity from object for smoke solver

Hi I noticed a nice example of adding vel for the fluid solver but what about for smoke? Tried a few things including downloading some other demos to put something together, but I couldn't get it to work. I am simply looking to blow my smoke outward instead of up or down. Can I do this with vel? Or should I be using a heat direction? Either way, if anyone has any example that would be great.
Oh, I should add: In my smoke object, I can drop down a volume primitive (vector: 1 0 0) and then go into the AutoDopNetwork and add the volume primitive to the “Velocity SOP Path”, but that only pushes the smoke in the direction of the vector. I am looking to birth outward in all directions. (Kind of like what I'd expect if I were doing particles and birthing off of normals)
Any ideas?

with houdini running in windows, how can I turn off the houdini console? Just overheard a co-worker asking and sure enough I tried typing in a few envs that i thought would be appropriate such as
setenv HOUDINI_WINDOW_CONSOLE = 0
setenv HOUDINI_CONSOLE = 0
no go. okay that last one was a hack. But in hconfig -a I don't see anything else I can address?

Technical Discussion » H9.5 - vel blur smothered by transformation blur?

I'll post my own reply…
Just heard from a little birdie (that just flew by… yada yada yada) that you have to manually extract the use geo_vel blur param in the mantra rop. How come? Honestly I didn't expect to have to look there because well, umm because I suppose I should've looked there!
having it in the rop by default should be the norm.

so let me get a verification from folks out there:
prerequisite:
1) at object: geo_velocityblur param is ON.
2) at rop: “Allow Motion Blur” ON
Am I to understand that when you have geo with a vel attribute (at the sop level) that any existing trans or rot chans at the object level will override the velocity attribute?
I no longer see any of the familiar velocity blur or deformation blur overrides that used to exist in H8 (and under). Just trying to get my bearings.
I ran a test and if I leave my objects transformations & rotations in place, and then attempt to include a vel attribute (that I know works) I still get the objects trans blurs… no recognition of the vel blur.
Used to be easier in H8, yes? - to specifically ask for the vel blur? I mean does H9.5 not recognize vel blur if there are trans and rots chans at the object level?

Help mode : troubleshooting
Problem : cannotstarthoudini
Platform : linux
Using commercial version : no
Can start hkey : yes
Can see sesinetd : yes
Machine is named localhost : no
Has ethernet card : yes
Has license(s) for this product : no
It was working : yes
All licenses have expired for product: no
Has a server license : no
PHPSESSID: c78630dae88387ad1822018a8c41002e
here's the info above. If anyone can help that would be great. When I try to redeem my licenses via hkey, the reply is “you are not currently entitled to any licenses”. However, a double/triple check at http://service.sidefx.com. [service.sidefx.com.] reveals that I do in fact have licenses for the upgrade available (status: “Unknown until redeemed”).
So I am guessing that this is the result of something I'm overlooking. (See troubleshooting diag above)
Also: hkey indicates have an invalid server key? …The notice shows up in red on the bottom of hkey server information tab. Also in the server information tab: another red button indicating this: The license server may not serve licenses.
any ideas? reinstall? If yes what are the options step-by-step? I believe I did everything necessary for installing new license data (because I know that new licenses are needed for H9.5)
btw - H9.1 works just fine.
