Hmmm the word could be distracting but not redundant I believe. I haven't tried the animation editor yet, but for Polysplit hovering a point, seing different edges highlighted in blue following some tiny mouse motions, I still find this confusing. I'd love to have another opinion about that…

Hello all, so here I'm providing the capture video of what I'm doing in Houdini to try to select edges à la “XSI Raycast”:
1) First I click Paint Select and disable “select visible geometry only”: it works exactly as expected.
2) Paint Select and enable “select visible geometry only”: nothing get selected, except when I LMB and drag on points.
3) Laser Select and disable “select visible geometry only”: nothing get selected.
4) Laser Select and enable “select visible geometry only”: nothing get selected.
So what do you think?
BTW, I can confirm the bug reported by McNistor in his post of Sat Sep 12, 2015 12:06 pm.
Thanks and see you soon,
G

I have tried the Brush select and the Laser Select tools but they don't behave like raycast in Soft. For example, to select edges, I just want to drag the mouse over many edges to select them. How?
What I find weird with the Brush Select tool is that one has to drag the mouse over a point to select its surrounding edges…

That is if you really intend to become a Houdini power-user and use it for everything at some point. Learning another app just for modeling, you're going to spread yourself thin.
But perhaps the mistake is to try to become Houdini rockstars, just as we were XSI rockstars? The dream of “one app does it all” has gone a long time ago. We live in a time when specialized apps do different things, and perhaps we all need some personal pipelines: Modo for Box Modelling, Zbrush for sculpt modelling, Mari for texturing, Houdini for sims and renders, etc. And on top of that: Fabric, for the missing tools.
Houdini will never have Zbrush abilities, and perhaps it will have good box modelling tools in many years. So waiting all these years with XSI, an app that does not evolve, could be frustrating, while other 3d artist are benefiting from new technologies.
I am tempted by this multi-app setup but I see 2 problems :
- A freelancer perhaps can't afford all these apps.
- Software interaction is so different between apps. The most annoying thing is the keyboard shortcuts. But also the fact all these apps have different “mindsets”.

Back to object isolation. Yes this is the problem I felt as well McNistor: in object level the “hide other object” display mode doesn't work.
Sekrom, please check this video where is demonstrated XSI's much used Object View, starting at 00:45 : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k7nwJ8tNY8 [youtube.com]

In fact I'm not trying to preempt a lot of issues and I do use a lot this tool. I'm just trying to understand how things work in order to send suggestions to SideFX (just like McNistor).
For example, if the starting vertex for an edge creation doesn't matter, what's the point of this blue highlight on the edge? Only the Point or vertex should be highlighted while hovering a point. The edge highlighting just adds to the confusion.
On top of that, the edge highlighting does not show 1 single starting vertex, but 2 possible ones… more confusion.
Thanks for your answers anyway. 8)

Hey MacNistor, you've been using Houdini more than me so you should have noticed in the top right of the 3d viewport there is a button, the second from the right, with 3 options , and one of them is “hide other objects”.
I'm often using this option when modelling but I have noticed it's a bit buggy… Sometimes, when I select some object, other objects should disappear, but they stay visible…
Is this also the reason you're not satisfied with this button?

Thanks Mc Nistor!
I think what I'll do is wait to check H15. if it's still difficult for modelling perhaps I'll evaluate other box modelling apps like Modo and Maya.
I don't think it's a good idea to keep using XSI while Houdini catches up : if Houdini needs several years to improve its modelling tools, I would stay with a stagnating software for too long. And it's better to use modern apps. The video that aty84122 posted is very nice.
XSI was outstanding for organic box modelling and had so many other advantages. Its workflow is still very competitive compared to nowadays' other apps. But it won't evolve anymore
Cheers.

Thanks Marty I understand better how it works now.
Yet another question: in the picture above, let's say I want to create a new edge starting from the bottom right of primitive 114, and reaching the top right of primitive 115.
As we said before, edges are connected to vertex, not points.
So does it make a difference if the edge starts by:
- Primitive 114, Vertex 2
- Primitive 115, Vertex 3
- Primitive 138, Vertex 1
- Primitive 139, Vertex 0
?

Hello Twod, thanks for the tip.
No improvement after switching to “Smooth Shaded”. I even tried to tumble around a sphere in bounding box display mode and still have the same problem!
Is my video card dying… ?

Geforce 9600 MS with the latest Nvidia Win10 drivers.
I told you it's an old rig!!
Note : same thing happens with a new cube in a new scene. Only happens in component works. Sometimes the lag will just disappear , even in component mode, then reappear.
Softimage is not affected by this lag, and no I won't uninstall it!! 8)

Yes it runs on Win10.
However I have horrible lags while working. I'm not sure it comes from Win10. The problem is… In the system requirement [sidefx.com] it says I need 4Gb of RAM, but I'm learning Houdini on an old laptop which has only 3 Gb of RAM, is this the cause of the slow interaction?
What I find strange is that it's only slow in geometry level… In object level, the interaction is perfectly normal.

OK I read your conversation and I see your points both of you so before I go further with Houdini modelling, I need to know:
- Are all current modelling tools going to be re-written?
- Has SideFX started to re-write these imperfect tools in Houdini 15?

Hello Marty
Thanks for your time and sorry to bug you over and over again
Yes, this is confusing. In XSI you add edges on edges and points. Houdini's vertex seem to be the same as XSI's samples, and I'm very astonished that Houdini can join a primitive's vertex to another primitive's vertex as vertex are “inside” primitive faces, while points are shared between different faces.
But OK, let's get used to that. However, I read your explanation, the Polysplit documentation and also Matthias screencap, and I'm still confused…
Please check the attached picture which contains my question…

Thanks Marty
Call me a bugger but I just want to understand the logic here so I have yet another question… :
A point is shared between 2 or more edges, is shared between at least 3 primitive faces.
So if the related edge should be highlighted in blue with he hovered point, then at least 2 edges should be highlighted in blue. However, most of the time, only one edge is highlighted along with the point. What gives?
:?

Right but if I'm hovering above a point (especially when snap to points is activated) only this point should be highlighted in blue. But in addition to this point, an edge is also highlighted in blue, why ?

Thanks SreckoM I installed CamStudio.
So in the attached video (re-ecndoded to MPEG4), this is what I'm talking about. When using Polysplit, and when hovering above points, one of the surrounding edge turns blue. If I move a bit the mouse, but stay above the point I want to join, another surrounding edge turns blue. I was just wondering what does mean this blue highlighting…
Note : since a few days, I have lags in Houdni, now trying to find where it comes from…
