You can also have a look at backup folder inside your hip folder. There you can find backup of your .hip file with _bakX suffix. See there whether backup file generated or not. By default it get generated after every minute but sometimes it may not.

most of the time there is more than one houdini open, and if one becomes unresponsive, I might have to kill it, but i cannot see the file names, in htop , is there a way to figure out which Houdini to kill based on scene name
PID tells you which job created first. Let's say you have 3 instances of Houdini open on your machine, now which Houdini you launch first, would have lower PID number.
You have to keep remember order of opening Houdini session or scene file.

Yeah, it's quite possible.
I would suggest you to use pack primitive for the same. Pack primitives are very memory efficient.
You can also use Delayed Load Shader.

You mean packed RBD??
You can use glue constrain.
You can use cross product for that.
I want apply spin force only when colliding?
You can use glue constrain.
I know RBDparked can control like particle, but have no idea how to give a spin force with a custom axis?
You can use cross product for that.

You can force Houdini to crash by
kill -11 PID
it will save your file in temp directory.
You can get PID by typing:
top | grep Houdini

create group of higher velocity particles at sop level then feed this in popsource dop's Source Group field. Use two stream one for higher velocity and another for normal points. This way you will have control over rate and other things independently.

Trail sop will not work because point number is changing per frame. You could do one thing (inside vopsop) just keep old velocity and normalize it and multiply by some number which works better in your case. This will give you nice motion blur.

Another related question, What is the best way of setting an initial state for flip fluid sim? Is is saving a .sim file and then loading this in?
Thanks1
Yes, you are right. This's only way to set initial state.

Apprentice version restrict you to render HD and without watermark. That is why there is .picnc which contains Houdini watermark.

Yes, fetch those mantras in cop network by render cop then merge those and use ROP Output driver cop to write single .exr.

What are you trying to render? Do you have enough Pixel Samples? You can find Under Properties>Sampling>Pixel Samples.
