If you want to stay with OSX than you already answered your own question. Just you have to prepare yourself for wait. Some developers will support Metal directly some will not. No one can give you exact date. Prepare for wait and uncertainty. That is going to be long process (stretched over several years). I had same doubt when trashcan was out, and back than decided to switch to Win/Linux and it proved to be right move. It had great GPUs back than but it was outperformed by 2x cheaper Nvidia cards pretty quickly. Only one render engine was using their full power, and when that engine arrived those card were already outdated. I do not consider switching back to OSX anymore.
If you want to squeeze most $ from your investment, want it right away, PCs are, especially with new Ryzen CPUs, better choice.
All this is related to 3D and Houdini, if you want talk about broadcast industry than you are on wrong forum.

explicit implication that we're somehow stupid for continuing to buy and use Apple hardware
Where exactly that has been implied in this thread? Can not find it, can you quote it?

Yeah I also think it is a bit early to panic. In this state OpenGl is still usable on OSX, and it will be for 2 years for sure, by than there is going to be some solution.
Even though I gave up on it. Ubuntu rocks for me.

What does it says on About? As far as I know Nvidia drivers on Ubuntu will not work (at least not without issues) with Secure Boot enabled. Go to terminal and type nvidia-settings. Does it open settings window?

No need to complicate so much.
First turn off Secure boot in BIOS. Did you do that?
When you say manually and terminal, what exactly does that mean? I install Ubuntu drivers by going Software updater and Additional drivers and check Nvidia proprietary.
No need for installing gcc, you have all that.
important thing is to turn off Secure boot.

It is about logic behind Houdini being nothing like other apps out there. In nutshell there is no tutorial that will make you wrap your brain around it in few days. However it is made. It is practice practice practice, when it clicks, you will see why things are like that and you will appreciate it. Yes it is hard for beginners, and it takes time. I had solid nodes and math background, and even after 6 months playing with Houdini I was confused as hell. Woke up one day and all of sudden everything made sense. It is no that I had divine touch it was just me playing with it, learning new nodes, expressions, looking at tutorials (which back them was like 50x less that today) and all that accumulated knowledge started working… There are things that are being developed and that asks for more learning, yup I am also addicted to old Point node, but that is life, progress. I had to learn VEX too.

I am using it on 18.04 with Nvidia without problems. I am almost 100% sure you did not install these drivers correctly. What does it says in About section?

I am. Was more than decade OSX user and one of my workstation is hackintosh for sole reason of being able to work with software I purchased all these years. Rarely using it for 3d even nowadays, though it has much better hardware than you can find on any Apple devices. Hackintosh: every update is risk of something stops working, you really never know how safe it is (many kernel things are patched), limited number of hardware, still not 100% sure how good USB works as Rehabman stuff is like for PhD, you are really never sure is system working nicely, and finally you get 0 support from Apple or from any other dev as your system is not supported at all … Yes OSX is great, for some best, but to me it makes sense only with real Apple device, hackinotsh is good, for toying, can do you job but for professional work I would stay from it. Thus me saying why …

MidphaseWhich is basically less stable than Linux .. on outdated OpenGL .. Without any support except some hackinotsh sites like Tony … What is point?
I use a Hackintosh which is basically the same exact price as a Linux box.

I had dual boot Hackintosh and Linux, and on that machine Houdini on Linux was significantly faster, from viewport navigation to cooking. Also Apple pushing AMD cards is not good for me cause Redshift. OpenCl is worse state than OpenGl, both not touched by Apple for some time, and how things are, both are probably abandoned.
About that manvsmachine, classic marketing, does not change thing that Houdini (and most 3d apps today) works better on Linux and Windows.

I would suggest KDE Neon. It is Ubuntu based, and it is Qt, which means that your Qt apps will look nice. I prefer it over OpenSuse cause I get used to Ubuntu, it is well supported, almost every app has ppa or deb. Plasma UI looks great, and it is highly customisable.

I do not think that you can sell image without GI nowdays on archviz market, even you do it perfectly. It is not point to get fast, noiseless render, it needs to look good too. Mantra is not built for archviz, especially not for freelancer or smaller studios, its strength lives in different realm.
One thing I would like to see in Mantra is straightforward tonemaping option, like Filmic or Reinhard RGB, and option of using 3dl or cube LUT formats.
Attached image is tonemaped with Filmic.
