I run a few systems in my home lab were my main is a dual-boot with Pop!_OS and Windows 10. All I can say is: a Linux system is about setting up your ideal experience, and that doesn't come for free. You need to learn a lot of new stuff and possibly program or script your own solutions, if you are willing to do that, you can end up with an amazing computing experience. However, it doesn't come by default, whereas Windows is more of an out-of-the-box working environment, which seems to be what you are looking for, no fault in that.
I think the only thing Linux will give you by default is better resource management and headaches, the rest you need to work for it and I say this not exactly happy about it but that's just is what it is.
Regarding some of your points:
- Fractional scaling is something that I miss, but upping the font's size was enough for me for now.
- In Windows, you use a custom program to read your EXRs, why not do the same in Linux? I use Xnview, works great, there is also DJV, chaos player and mrviewer2 just to name a few.
- About Houdini, I can only speak about stability and between my colleagues I'm the only one not having any memory crashes, other type of crashes I have those like everyone else. Windows will always feel snappier but that doesn't mean better performance, if you compare a heavy sim, a heavy render, a heavy project 1 to 1 between systems my bet is Linux will Sim, Render and Load faster.
-"Linux has a promise of freedom and open source" the fact is: Linux is free and open source, if that doesn't translate into something good for me then that's too bad, not Linux's fault.
- Whatever the VFX platform says you need to remember that big studios usually have a team of people just to setup systems, and that's what those distros excel at, I would love to have a tech that sets up everything for me but too bad I don't have it, no problem at all using Ubuntu, Pop or any distro that's easy to setup but not recommended. Plasticity runs just fine in POP, along with Fusion and Resolve.
Answering your last question:
What makes you use Linux?
I really enjoy the customization, the lack of nonsensical letters for drives, faster load up times, having control over updates and not having an ad in the start menu, among many others.
Either way is not a Binary choice, customize your experience to tailor your needs.

Thank you for sharing.
I also wanted to add to this endeavor with some of my progress of my own as well, I managed to both set up the pivots in SOPs as well as rig the asset with KineFX and successfully transform the pieces.
The only problem so far is that the transform matrix is inside the mesh and I wanted it to be in the parent xform, I figured one could write a custom vex to do this in Lops but I lack the sufficient knowledge, maybe someone can further this research and post an update below.

Chipping in as well to ask for a CAD import / Datasmith integration, also expanding the current nurbs toolset would be awesome as well as natively supporting CAD formats to import as curves.

Baseline Houdini and Solaris and two very different programs specially from the perspective of someone just getting into it, not saying it's your case but one could very well get stuck somewhere and think it's a bug.
To be fair this issue with the camera is very recent although it completely defies all logic as to how this bug have been left unsolved for so long is not characteristic of Sidefx.
I would invite you to share what bugs have you run into so that maybe we can share some possible solutions, Solaris is not perfect but I would never define it as a buggy experience.

I've also summited this bug as soon as it came out in Production release .534. Up until 493 we didn't had this issue.
But, this bug is more sinister than just shutting down Houdini.
What actually happens is the Camera LOP State slow down Houdini by a certain percentage per view-port window, when you have only one view in the scene is not that noticeable but if you pay attention to the responsiveness you will feel a difference but by the time you have (and this is how I normally work in Solaris) two views side to side it starts lagging and of course when you go to four-views Houdini crawls to a stop.
I've tried every daily built since but the problem persists at least till daily .623.

I'm running Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS with the Nvidia Driver with Houdini 19.5.605 and I was getting pretty much the same issue as several people here but fortunately it got fixed after installing "lsb-core" as someone else pointed out.

Help browser still does not work on Linux. Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
Adding QTWEBENGINE_DISABLE_SANDBOX=1 env variable fixed it.
Thank you, this did it for me as well.

Solaris and Karma » Saving textures with USD ROP

I was wondering if there was a layman way for the USD ROP to do the same thing the Component builder does when saving assets, that is an option to Localize External Non-USD Files.
The workflow with the Component builder is fine but sometimes for smaller scenes where no components are being built and the workflow is more like OBJ to LOPs it would be a huge plus to have that to make scenes more portable without jumping through hoops.
I realize that there might be a way to already do this but I'm still learning, any help would be appreciate it.

Hi, Is there a way to do this? if so how do you load the textures in a Mtlx material, if not what would be the best practices for building USD assets and not losing track of the textures be? I appreciate all the help, thanks.

Yes, for example if I get the NVRTC Error the moment I try to start Redshift Houdini would just crash
wow, ok.terrypxm
For now I'm waiting for the next production release.
Are you able to test with one of the recent daily builds? (eg 19.5.420? or later?)
thanks!
Sure, I just tried the latest .424 and switched between Karma and Redshift and neither crash nor did I get NVRTC messages in the console, this is great news.

Hi guys
Any update on this? Has anyone had a chance to try out 19.5.420? (or later)terrypxm
I'm Having this same issue, Redshift is bricked right now.
Another thing, this comment caught my attention.
I thought it was only KarmaXPU that was failing. Are you saying Redshift also failed?
cheers!
Yes, for example if I get the NVRTC Error the moment I try to start Redshift Houdini would just crash but if I try Karma instead it would work. For now I'm waiting for the next production release.
