Hey Francesco,
I think it would be a good idea to attach your .hip file.

Technical Discussion » Set Color(Cd) from Node Color

Hey Everybody,
Is anybody capable of creating a node which sets the Cd attribute based on its own “node color”?
I think this would be very useful to organize streams of geometry in a network.
so you can see more easily which geometry you see in the viewport corresponds with what part of the network tree.
Cheers

Hey KKrEEpER,
here is a version that uses a timeshift node and a stamp value to “freeze” each crystal to its own time.

Hey Midphase,
you could also try to model everything like you did in one object- for convenience.
everything you want later to be subdivided could be assigned to a group called “SubD” or so…. when it comes to rendering you just use a split node and use the group “SubD” to split the geometry. now you can object merge everything you want to be subdivided into a new object - with new redshift properties.
Cheers

Hey Everybody,
I want to build an asset for which I need to calculate the tangent point on a given circle that crosses a given point. I'm pretty close but slightly off. maybe somebody could take a look at my hip file and give me a hint.
thanks in advantage

Hey brian,
What about using blend shapes. You could Build a cutted version and a clean version of the piece.
Then blend the two shapes with a custom attribute.
you could also try a boolean operation.
Cheers

Technical Discussion » How can I copy geometry along normal?

You have to give your sphere a normal node and set it to “add normals to points” before you scatter.
and if you are confused by the orientations you receive:
your scattered instances will use their z-axis as the “up-direction”

Technical Discussion » Volatile Navigation Confusion
- CYTE
- 685 posts

Hey Everybody,
I find the navigation shortcut behaviour of Houdini quite strange.
it uses both alt and space to enter volatile camera navigation in the viewport. sometimes only commands get executed when you use the space bar.
the problem is that I want it only to use the alt key as I want the space bar to do something else. as soon as I remove space as a shortcut for “volatile view operation” the alt key isn't working either. but you cannot assign the alt key to this command. it's somehow hidden from the user.
I think this behaviour is annoying and cumbersome.
my suggestion:
let the user give shortcuts to the navigation tools as they like.
pan, dolly, orbit could become alt+MMB, alt+RMB, alt+LMB or S+LMB, A+LMB, D+LMB or whatever.
this way it would be clear and not as confusing as it is atm.
maybe I'm missing the right way to do it.
could somebody give me a hint how to reassign the space key and still be able to navigate with the alt-key?
Cheers
CYTE
edit:
ok, i found a way. by assigning “volatile view operation” to some key I don't care about I get alt key working for navigation again. now space can be something else. but still, custom navigation key bindings would be really great.

hey robsdesign,
thanks for your feedback. I found the error for Arnold. its produced by the “auto-generate tx textures” option. when it turned off I am able to overwrite textures. And Redshift is working now, too. without changing anything. smells like user error Thanks again everybody!

Hey Everybody,
thanks for the help. It seems to be an issue when one is rendering with Arnold or Redshift. Then a texture that is used by a shading network gets blocked…. in mantra it is working.

thanks for the help. yes photoshop prompts that the file is locked by an other program and wont let me overwrite it. does your 2d program let you overwrite files that are used within houdini?
