i found out a solution in the end from the link above.
used pattern matching in the object pattern parameter of the alembic SOP to isolate various group depending on their names.

Dear Forumers,
I have imported an abc file and want to apply materials to various elements. The groupings are based on locations though so it would be an EXTREMELY long and tedious process to apply certain materials to certain elements.
Is there a better, swifter way?
Everything is named well so some kind of script might be helpful, say, apply X material to all nodes names containing such and such?
Any help much appreciated.

Dear Forumers,
I wondered how one can setup a terminal velocity when gravity is a force within a dynamics sim. Obviously terminal velocity is very complicated in reality but I was wondering if there is a simple way to cap max velocity of simed objects.
Currently I am using particle fluids to simulate raindrops so the answer for this type of sim is preferable.

What would be a good or the best way to slightly dirty/“noise-ify” the default chrome material in Houdini?
I have a smashing chrome sphere thats meant to be in the “MATRIXESQUE” white light for which I have an envlight. Something is reflected in it too.

Instancing doesn't automatically propagate point attributes to the instanced objects. Here's a solution via material overrides - there are other ways too, I'm sure
Turns out I wasn't instancing, but using a RBD point object. Sorry for the bad Houdini vocab.
I have attached my hip. Dunno whats going on.

I've been trying to use your provided file and it won't work with my geo. It is not particles, it is lots of RBD point objects instancing cubes but I don't understand why its not working as they all have velocity attrs on their points like your example file.

I am trying to collapse a building. I have watched and tried to follow this tutorial. I am on trying to get smoke to come out of my collapsing building but cannot for the life of me figure out why it won't work.
