In my experience with the Mac Pro (not the iMac Pro), Houdini has gotten much more stable since the Mac Pro came out into thousand 13. And or, it might be the other way around, the Mac OS has gotten more stable. At this point, I wouldn’t hesitate to use Houdini on a Mac pro, I would prefer it in fact, but the delayed and unpredictable Apple roadmap, not to mention the continuing divorce from Nvidia GPUs, makes me want to consider other options, like the one you laid out.
Ultimately, we’re considering an iMac Pro (although there you have to consider whether you want to be tied to a single display) With an eGPUs vs a speedy, thunderbolt 3 Linux box, maybe also with an eGPUs.

fuosI’ve never bought / built one so distros, specs, seem like a good place to get advice. Also, h/w atm is a changing landscape, eg, eGPUs, RAM costs, etc.kevinthebright
Can you elaborate on the pain? I’m pretty comfortable with Unix, using the terminal, etc and AFAIK, most Linux users seem to be happy enough with their builds
If you're a comfortable with unix then linux is fine. Not sure why you are asking about hardware then? It's simply a multi-core/gpu system with the latest mobo, the fastest ram, pci lanes et al. HW is easy compared to bash!

Also, I’ll still have a Mac for the rest, Nuke, PS, Zbrush…this would just be for Houdini.

Since the new Mac Pros aren’t coming until 2019 now, I think I’ll switch Houdini to a Linux box. Recommendations on models, places to buy, Linux distros?
Also, would love it if Sidefx published a recommended build from time to time.

Your Houdini enviromental variables file is under ~/Preferences/Houdini/16.5 by default. You'll need to open it in a text editor and add the file paths to RM.
See this article:

And there is a helpful discussion in the Renderman for Houdini forum too.

I'm hoping as a developer they would consult with us on that decision, and at least give us a decent heads up.
If they do, can you guys publish a Linux partspicker list for a fast Houdini machine?
Honestly, I'd haved switched to Linux a couple years ago as the Mac Pro aged out but haven't sucked it up and sorted out the possible CPU / GPU / Linux distros, etc.

Hi guys,
Old thread but I'm having the same issue when applying textures to polywires following a wire sim. I looked James' 3 examples but they don't use image textures. Here's a hip if you have time to check it out.
Thanks, Kevin

I'm creating packed prims in SOPs at different times, e.g., 1 at Frame 10, 2 at Frame 20 and so on but I can't get DOPs to read them in, other than by setting the creating frame to after they are all created. How do I set the RBD Packed DOP to create an object only on the frame it comes into DOPs for multiple objects?
I realize there may be no easy way to do this but it seems like there should be.

I think my problem is/was related to the Viewport > Composite op, which I’m guessing is OpenGL scene redraws. It was eating up my performance so I closed the scene view and could adjust parameters without Houdini trying to cook something. When I created a new scene view, the problem came back. I’m on a Mac so perhaps its related to the QT 5 troubles?
I don’t know how they are related, or if I am correct as to what Composite is doing, but it seemed to be the problem for me in that script. Awkward though.

What is Houdini trying to cook when I have the brain icon set to off (big red X) and update set to manual? Hip only has one sim network, pops, and I'm resetting keyframes for forces in pops but Houdini keeps trying to cook something? Filecaches are set to no-op.
I would love to know how to shut down all processes in Houdini when doing something like this. It seems there is always something slowing it down no matter how many things are turned off.
(sorry if I sound terribly annoyed, it is but c'est la vie)

I upgraded to the latest drivers but will go back and check for old versions. Thanks Jonathan. SpaceMouse is pretty cool.

Update: The 3D mouse appears to only work in one instance of Houdini at a time, the first one opened, as far as I can tell.
Is anyone using the Spacemouse on multiple instances of Houdini with no problems? I'm on a Mac, Houdini 16.5.
Thanks, Kevin

I'm using the SpaceMouse and H16.5 on a High Sierra Mac Pro. The 3DMouse works fine in Safari but only intermittenly in Houdini and when it does work, sometimes stops working after my computer goes to sleep. I'm using it wired but the same thing happens with Bluetooth.
Anyone else have this problem?
