I know the rbd solver has an ‘add impact data’ toggle, but I don't see any such option for the cloth solver. I have to imagine its possible, but am clueless as to how to do so. Any ideas?

How can I use snaps to align for example one point or several points to other points on a line? I can use the ctrl key and hold this down while dragging to constrain to an axis but at some point it flips to another axis or 45 degees while I am dragging and I can no longer align the points I want.

Houdini Lounge » modifying autorig internals- creating new digital asset

I am modifying some of the rigging inside the autorig. I'd like to save that leg as a new digital asset. I am semi-experienced in digital asset creation, but I'm not quite sure how to get this all working. Is there any suggested workflow I could use to save out a new HDA and use that instead of the default leg?
I know it probably won't successfully update with the modify system, etc, but I really need to modify it, and hope to not have to do duplicate work on both legs.

is it possible to use otwrite to create an empty otl?
instead of
otwrite Object/null myCustomDef.otl
use
otwrite Object myCustomDef.otl
without specifying an object to include in the definition?

Hey,
i am using the Houdini Aprentice version, and have problems with my mouse using it. After a while, sooner or later, I can't click anything. All buttons are dead. Even when I want to close to restart Houdini, the file menu pops up but the buttons on the confirmation window like dicard and close doens't work. Does anyone have the same problems or any idea how to solve that?
I am using Houdini 9.5 Aprentice on a iMax Leopoad, with the wireless keyboard and the wireless mighty mouse.
Thanks

Technical Discussion » Custom CHOP cook (and export) not working
- nestumkiller

Hi!
I have a custom chop (HDK) that creates a set of channels meant to be exported to a camera node outside the CHOP network.
I set the export object as the camera node: ../..cam1 on the GUI and I set the export and display flags. However, my camera only gets those values if I toggle the export flag off and on (which makes it cook). It also works when I wire a Null CHOP and use that chop to export it to the camera. As I want to make it work standalone, is there any flag sort of like flags().setTimeDependent() that makes it cook and respetively export the values? I've tried the setAlwaysCook() on the cookMyChop() but it didn't work
Thanks

Technical Discussion » python copying parameters of autorig
- josh3light

I'm trying to do something a little unorthodox with the autorig, I'd like to save an unlocked modified copy of the quadruped leg inside another otherwise empty digital asset, then reference the parameters from the original quadruped leg rig.
This seems like it will work, however I'm trying to copy these parameters with python. I have written and tested the scripts I need to do these tasks, but I'm getting some errors when referencing the channels with python. Could someone point me in the right direction on what might be a possible cause of this error?
Traceback (most recent call last):
File “<console>”, line 1, in <module>
File “hou.session”, line 9, in copyParms
File “Ccygwin/home/prisms/builder-new/NightlyHEAD/dev/hfs/houdini/scripts/python\hou.py”, line 13368, in set
return _hou.Parm_set(*args)
ValueError: invalid null reference in method ‘Parm_set’, argument 2 of type ‘HOM_Parm &’
———————————————–
an alternative to this would be making the auto rig leg more flexible (or explaining a better way to modify it). It doesn't have bones in a convenient way to make a proper horse leg. I kind of like the setup, I'd just like to modify it a little bit according to what I need.

Houdini Lounge » Houdini + cluster grid. It possible ?

Hi all.
I need some support from specialists, who have used Houdini for large fluid simulations.
Now Houdini fluids take a long calculation time. Research process is difficult with this speed. I really sure, fluids will be optimized (i`m right?) in future, but now, Houdini fluids need some solution, or workaround, for learning, tests and their adaptation in VFX process.
Questions:
1.
Someone try to use Houdini with clusters grid ? For example - MOSIX. Any fluid simulations take a very long times. I don`t know enough computer configurations for fast fluid solutions. I think only cluster can do this. I skilled in Linux, but I don`t skilled in clusters, and need any competent opinions.
2. Houdini fluids give a great flexibility. Really. But i hope, fluids will be optimized for more fast calculation. This is a not my personally request, but today clients wants Sad
FUMEfx plugin for 3dMax do very fast (but some identical look in most cases) results. Maya too (but simulation result is some dirty). Is a SESI have planned fluids optimization in future ?
3. How this look in big studios ? What solutions used for large fluid simulations ?
Houdini 9.5 - is a great step in many things. Fast mantra volumetric render (yeah!), many improvements with volumes - right way.Happy to see this progress Smile
i`m ask about “field”, or “container-based” fluids, of course. Particle fluids is great now for me.
Big thanks for any answers.

Technical Discussion » attributeTransfer SOP (doesn't always work?)
- massta

Here is an example of the attributeTransfer SOP working just fine.
I'm selecting a group of points, then grabbing the center of those points from a bounding object.
I'm transferring the center of one of the sides of the bounding box to another grid.
This works here, but not in my other file where the only difference is the incoming bounding object is from a more complicated scene.
I spreadsheet each incoming attributeCreate, but the transfer isn't taking.
It stays as the first input. Not sure why.
H8.1
EDIT: As always there is an alternative method. I took all the points in the bound and placed them at center using a point sop. Then deleted all but one point. Then used a copy sop to place grid at center of bound (now a single point) instead of using the attributeTransfer.

HI……..
As Auto Archiving feature is not yet provided with H9, can it be implemented using Soho and simple scripting. First of all , do we have to use Soho , or just preRender script will work. If Soho is used, and we create our own mantra node, can we do the archiving job first and call the orignal mantra.py to do the rest of the job???

Technical Discussion » Expression on the "Signature" attribute
- koen

Hello all,
I am trying to write an otl to average point attributes. This is really easy using a pcfilter node in a vop network.
I now want to deliver it nicely packed to the user. So I give them one field to type in the attribute and the user can choose between float and vector, because I need to specify this in the signature attribute on the pcfilter node. To give the filtered attribute back, I use an addattrib vop node. The last one also requires the signature set.
When I right click on the signature I can get to the expression editor (pasting stuff does not work). I have tried to type in an expression like `chs(“../type”)` but that does not seem to work. Is there a clean way to have one parameter in the otl drive both the signature settings?
(This is assuming I need to set the signature manually, is there no way the get this from the attribute like type(point_attr) )
Any help is appreciated,
Koen

Hi friends!
I use the PyXML modules from Houdini.
When I parse a XML file, it returns a data structure with nodes but it include a nodes with “\n”, “\t”, etc….
Does the parser have a system for delete this nodes or similar?
Thaaaaankss!!!!

Houdini Lounge » Calculating distance between guide hairs and geometry

Hi everyone I would like to calculate the distance between the guide hairs I'm using and the geometry the fur is being generated on then use that calculation to prevent the fur from penetrating the surface during animation.
Why do it this way? I want to try animating the guide geometry with a lag chop instead of a wire dop. in that case I don't want to use Rbd's and would like to rig up some type of repelling system. I'm not really creating a fur look, its actually hair for a horse's mane.
Any advice would be appreciated greatly!
