Hi, I'm new to Houdini and a beginner to intermediate with Cinema4D and Maya. I have some basic understanding of procedural modeling and animation, but I still need to learn the differences in command syntax, and where all the various buttons are (Functional layout).

All of the beginner tutorials for Houdini use Houdini 9, and I'm guessing there must be some significant differences because my projects don't always turn out the same.

Are there any newer beginner tutorials for Houdini 11?

Hi,
In “An Introduction to Houdini's User Interface” they start off by creating text, “Houdini 9” and in the end, when the text is supposed to drop to the floor, my text breaks up into pieces, and slowly drifts through the floor.

In “An Introduction to Houdini's Node-Based Workflow” I can create the forest, but when I insert the final transform node (xform1) I get the red bars on the xform1 and copy1 nodes.

I've double checked the text that is entered during the process and done both tutorials a few times with the same results.

I'm thinking that some of the defaults might be different, but I'm not really sure.

Can anyone recommend a good book for Houdini 11?

Hi,
I found my mistake in the procedural forest, but when I do the “ui_intro” tutorial my text breaks into individual faces when it hits the ground plane.

I like the effect and would like to use it but I can't figure out how to make my letters stay together.

I would be extremely grateful if someone would work through the tutorial with H11 and see if the same thing happens.

Thanks
J

Hi J,

I have posted a H11 version of the text breaking with RBD demo and a short description of the changes here: http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=77&t=947533 [forums.cgsociety.org]

My hip file is in the work-in-progress section for reference: http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewtopic&t=21888 [sidefx.com]

You may want reference Peter Quint's tutorials to get started. They can be found at: http://www.vimeo.com/user2030228 [vimeo.com]

Hope this is what you are looking for.

Cheers,
