Transparent 3d volume - sphere with ramp April 15, 2017, 12:49 a.m.
Great question - I don't know. I want the sphere to move with the aircraft animation. The gradient will be procedurally generated (input from a CFD application calculating aircraft noise)
Maybe better would be to express my goal: I want to represent the noise emanating from the aircraft as a color ramp that is 3D omnidirectional, and that still allows seeing the aircraft inside the “bubble.”

I'm new to Houdini and looking for a way to get a 50% transparent shader onto a 3D sphere. The goal is to show a ramp of color where the red is at the center of the sphere, and green on the outside. Idea shown in this image from a different package.
Any advice?

volume shader with gradient March 31, 2017, 11:30 a.m.
I'm seeking a way to get a volume shader applied to a sphere such that a gradient ramp is represented omnidirectionally around a point. In this case the goal is to show the amount of noise in dB surrounding an aircraft taking off. This screenshot is from another package, and I'm new to Houdini. Hoping someone can suggest a way to achieve this effect in Houdini.
It would be great if the gradient was procedural, so I can do lookups on the value as it contacts other objects.
Thanks!
