Did houdini provide better support for the story / camera setup than blender?

I found that complex parenting is easier to do and easier to follow in houdini (visual feedback), easier to play with non-destructively. And camera work is all about parenting. Because of that iterations are very cheap and trials fluent. You can make a lot of steps forward until you need a step back, not an issue. Good for the narrative.

The fact that houdini project files does not hold any heavy data (unlike blender) allows lots of fast iterations, you can explore many branches without losing track of your work and disk space. Good for the narrative.

Take this with the grain of salt as I spent a lot more time in houdini compare to blender.
