Hi

I recently bought a graphics card AMD 270X .
I knew amd can have some graphics bugs , but my main idea was to use it for OpenCL simulation .

I tested OpenCL and I think there's a problem .
This card have 4gb ram. When and run simulation on 250x250x250 grid everthing is fine , but on 300x300x300 , drivers crash ( Houdini hang up , or got blue screen from windows )

I think when simulation is taking more than 1GB of VRAM , Houdini crash ( or windows ) . And i monitor this with GPUZ , and Houdini variable to monitor OpenCL memory .

I test this with Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1 .

Another thing i have garbled text in the UI like this thread :

http://www.sidefx.com/index.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=172&page=viewtopic&p=140193&sid=9d6dc567c91799a61766e1d6954c0924 [sidefx.com]
In Houdini 13 with AMD's latest beta drivers , the problem is gone , but in Houdini 12.5 problem is still present .

So regarding OpenCL and do not know where the problem is , in Houdini software or in amd drivers .

And is this something that can be resolve in the near future , or I should buy some GTX card ?

I tested the GTX card with 2 GB of VRAM and is working fine , and my plan is to buy a 4GB version , but i dont know that Houdini can use all 4GB of VRAM ?

Thanks

AMD's OpenCL implementation runs in 32b addressing mode by default. You can switch to 64b mode by setting the environment variable GPU_FORCE_64BIT_PTR to 1. This should allow the sim to use the full 4GB (or higher, if you had a card with more than 4GB).

A change was made in 13.0.259 that attempted to resolve the font problem, but this wasn't backported to 12.5. That could be the reason that 13.0 is in the clear.

I make windows system environment varible GPU_FORCE_64BIT_PTR , value 1 , and same thing happened .

I red your link that you gave me and there is this:

“So the kernel's binary (ISA) needs 64bit memory access and 64 bit arithmetic for the address calculation in order
to support >4GB of the buffer allocations”

So this is for memory larger than 4 gb , but as i said houdini crash with 1gb.

So i'm now looking into some profesional graphics.
So my question is , does amd firePro cards have same problems like this , if someone with firePro can test this i'll be grateful.

I have a FirePro W8000 available for testing. If you'd like to post the hip file your were using, I'll give it a try (just so we're on the same page).

Here you go.

Scene is set on manual update , change on automatic and hit play.

I immediately get blue screen.

Are you running the the latest Houdini production build? H13.0.376

Looks like you've saved this with Houdini version 13.0.198.21..
