Hi. Pretty new to Houdini, coming from Max. I've made a scattering HDA and I assume I'm doing something wrong. I've tried the same amount of scattered objects in Max and Houdini, using V-Ray 5 in both, using the same Megascans object, and in Max the render starts in seconds without problems, but Houdini is "evaluating python" for minutes and then often freezes or crashes. In Houdini I've packed the scatter objects, loading with "delayed", tried remove all excess attributes etc etc, following all the tips I could find here and other places, but no luck. Same thing happens for heightfield scattering and "Scatter and Align" on polygon meshes.

So, I guess I'm doing something wrong, but I just can't find exactly what. Is there a checklist to follow for scattering workflows? Any tips would really be appreciated.

I'm using Houdini 18.5 and V-Ray 5. My computer is a bit old and built for rendering (=many, relatively slow cores).
