I just read the chart, the RTX 4070 TI Super is 15.67% faster than the RTX 3090 for OpenCL, it might not be enough of a reason to buy an RTX 4070 TI Super, and the RTX 3090 has more ram, the only reason to get a RTX 4070 TI Super would be much faster ray-tracing, but you get 16 GB of VRAM instead of the 3090 24 GB, it really depends on the kind of work you do!

Like I said, it's a toss between VRAM, rendering power, and price, I choose the RTX 4070 TI Super because I felt that it was the best bang for my buck, 16 GB of VRAM filling most of my needs, but if you need more VRAM, than either stick to the RTX 3090, which is still a great card BTW, but you'll miss on render power, the RTX 4090 is also an option, of course, but they cost double the RTX 4070 TI Super!
There are rumours about an RTX 5xxx series coming out by the end of the year, the RTX 5090 could have as much as 32GB of DDR7 VRAM and be 70% faster than the RTX 4090, you might want to wait for more info on those, but so far it's only a persistent rumour, no official announcement from Nvidia!

Thank you kindly. So in summary 4070 should be in general faster than 3090 in karma xpu but in other areas of Houdini where OpenCL is used - 3090 would be faster?
Here is an OpenCL benchmark...

Karma XPU was optimized for the Nvidia ADA Shader Execution Reordering found in the Nvidia ADA Lovelace GPU, so my understanding is that it only affects shader efficiency and rendering.
For more info...

To give you a better idea which GPU is best for 3D, look at the Blender Open Data page, it shows the results for the Blender benchmark, higher is better...

Did some Pyro test renders in H20.5 at 512 samples, average frame render time 7 seconds, a tad more than 2.5X faster than 20.0

In my previous tests I was getting 10-15% faster renders on Linux compared to Windows, having the latest Nvidia drivers is essential though, assuming that you have an Nvidia GPU.
Usually you need special procedure to get the latest Nvidia drivers, like adding the proper drivers' repository, here is how you install the latest drivers on Linux Mint or Ubuntu...

I'd say Linux, I use Mint 21.3, Houdini is much faster with it than Windows, I find it to be more stable too, and you can run both Windows and Linux on the same PC, in case you absolutely need some Windows only apps!

I find that the RTX 4070 TI Super is the best buy for your money, for more VRAM you'd need a RTX 4090, which are double the price!

LukePSpecific to Nvidia ADA Lovelace graphics cards, that's the GPU for the RTX 4.x cards, those GPUs have better ray-tracing capabilities than previous Nvidia GPUs, XPU was optimized for those GPUs in H20.5!
Wonder if this is specific to 4xxx or also to 3090

Just tested the Bar Scene from the Content Library on my RTX 4070 TI Super 16GB VRAM, default settings with 512 samples...
H20.0 - 8m 57s
H20.5 - 3m 11s
That's a tad over 2.8X faster, more and more impressed with H20.5 XPU rendering on RTX 4.x cards!

I build all my scenes at the OBJ level, then add a LOP Network, in the LOP node I import the scene, add a Karma node, then I am set, pretty straightforward IMHO, I don't see why some people seem to freak out about Solaris when it is so simple to use!

I’m running into annoyances with the sculpt tool. When I brush over, the brush seems to pause every second or so, then picks up, pauses, annoying interaction… not sure if this is a card issue or what….
I just did a test and I went up to 5M polys with no issues, was pretty smooth with 5 layers, I run Linux Mint 21.3, it might help, since Houdini is faster on Linux!

You can easily create sculpt layers by stacking nodes, in this example I created 2 layers, remeshgrid1 is set to .05, remeshgrid2 is set to .025, so each layer is remeshed and has its own level of details, works perfectly, sculpt data is passed down no problems, I am loving this, not a full-blown sculpting tool, but still pretty cool!

Hi,we still don't have one option to delete or rename these presets.
Playing with sculpting at the moment, man this is cool, SideFX developers are completely mad, mad I tell ya!

briansI run 555.52.04, always the latest, on that last render I get a bit over 2.5X speed increase, very pleased with my little graphics card at the moment!GCharb
I did a few more render tests with XPU ray-trace
What driver are you on?
If you're on a 555+ driver, then you'll get the NVidia "Shader Execution Reordering" feature (new hardware in the ADA generation of GPUs)

H20.0 - 9m 38s
H20.5 - 6m 30s
My specs...

128 GB of DDR4 @3200
Nvidia RTX 4070 TI Super
So far I can't see much of a difference with the Vulcan viewport, but it is on by default, I will test with a much larger scene, so far it looks pretty good, next, Copernicus...
