Weird, you should be using Apprentice, posting .hipnc file if you're new to Houdini.
There is a site called "Google" where you can type in "Houdini inflate balloon."

Here's an example that works for me. Try migrating your geometry into this HIP file. Don't change the world size, scale your geo down to fit this working template.

That blue bar represents the window into your physical memory cache. It defaults to 5Gb. You can expand it to use more of your physical ram, but a better approach it so write your simulation out to a dedicated file sequence using the FileCache node. Check the help card. Once you have a file cache, you can scrub the simulation much quicker, and not have to "re-cook" every time.

AO is typically multiplied with the base color. Have you tried that with your painter map?

It is a BIG problem that SideFX should fix. But it's been that way for several release. There are troves of posts about "Hey, the viewport don't look like my render."
A 1:1 color match is what most end users want out of the product.

I played around with emulating some After Effects typography. Feel free to check out the thread on OdForce.

The viewport is just a guide. You're comparing an 8 bit jpeg screen grab to a floating point EXR color space. What you render is the true pixel value. Click the viewport full range button and adjust the viewport f-stop to match the viewport to the render, but I think most people look past that task and just accept the render is the final look.

One thing to remember is that when inside a loop, there is only one point, point #0. Every single point presents itself as point #0 while inside the loop. So your first attribute wrangle is always true. Don't forget to leverage the Single Pass feature located on the Block End node of your loop. Activate the checkbox to step through each iteration of your loop.

Yep, old tutorials can lead to a dead end. Try visiting the tutorials on this site under the Learn menu up top. You can filter by Houdini version to find guidance that matches your install. Don't give up. At the start, the learning curve is a little steep, but once you climb that hill, you'll see a blooming meadow of visual effects.
It takes about a year for Houdini to sink in, at least for me, it did.

Try switching your emission type to All Points. Then revisit your Birth setting to reduce the Impulse Count. Turn it down to 1. You probably don't want 10,000 copies of all your input points generated per-frame.
