just encountered something:
when I drop a skylight from the shelf the console prints a
'Qt Warn: QPixmap: It is not safe to use pixmaps outside the GUI thread'

after that
on doing file ->new (same as on quitting Houdini):
'Qt Warn: QObject::setParent: Cannot set parent, new parent is in a different thread.'
Once it crashed.

In case someone else runs into this, deleting the prefs folder seems to have corrected the problem for that user.
