quick way to create grass and trees?

Hey Dude,
Check out the L-Systems tutorial for the trees and leaves. Use polywire to connect the polygons on the branches with the base of the tree over the node system. Grass can be done in two ways you can do like 6 to 10 different model versions of grass then setup a pop sop or a pops network and instance the different versions to the particles layed out over the surface of the ground or selection of points you paint in a groups node. Other option is to do it in Vex and particle hair rendering. Although if you need the detail to the point you zoom down into the grass I suggest the first solution with the instances.
