Now, seeing 90% of this functionality already is in Houdini, what I'm suggesting really is more of a default settings tweak, having autosave on as default, but before having a saved scene file, suppressing the dialog and creating a temp file in the background. What I would love to see added is that temp file check when starting a session, and/or on opening a scene file, checking if there's a newer autosave of that scene available.
And having had similar discussions about other software, I know many argue that this type of thing is redundant if you just organize yourself better, just save your file and use the auto save functionality in Houdini, and though I don't disagree that works, personally I regularly run session with no intention to ever save the scene, just doing small RnD sessions - and though I sometimes save a temp file on the desktop, if I'm just gonna open a session for some quick tests, I often won't bother.
The problem is, sometimes that initial idea of just doing a small test becomes something more complicated, but the initial mindset not saving the file won't really change - and then you do something really stupid and crash Houdini, hehe… And I bet I'm not the only one who does this.
Oh and ^ this just happened. Because of course that's why I'm posting this!!
