RBD cymatics-like sim with custom pattern/texture

Hello! I am trying to create a RBD sim where particles attract to a mask from a texture. I was able to get the mask on my grid but when converting the mask to gradient to calculate velocity it only takes information from my grid and not the masked points on my grid. I am not sure where to go from here and I have been scratching my head troubleshooting and have nothing. I just want particles to attract to the mask and when I switch the texture, attract to a new texture on my grid. Here's an example:
Any help would be awesome!
