Houdini Indie and Apprentice » modeling 101 - how would you build this simple shape?

I modeled what I thought would be a relatively simple shape. However, the number of steps seems…extreme? It feels convoluted. Is my approach completely backward? Is there a better way? I'd love to see how you would model it.

No, I'm looking for a how-to on more general game-related stuff, like texture baking. For example, here's an excellent video from Allegorithmic on baking in Substance [youtube.com]. They've got a great series of videos, and even cover details about what a cage is [youtube.com] and how to set it up.

Technical Discussion » sorting random (noisy) points that clearly make a shape

I have a bunch of randomized points, and in this example they form a circular shape, although they could easily be a noisy line. Even though I can clearly see the shape in the noise, I haven't figured out how to order the points so I can add a line across them.
My attempt was to split the circle into 2 halves, and then sort along the z-axis. Although it mostly works, it can still run into problems as shown in the image.

I have a grid with noise applied to it. I tried using the BakeTexture node, but the result is circular. I'm not sure why…

Is it possible to export export tiling noise patterns from Houdini? My first thought was to reach for Substance Designer or even UE4, but if Houdini can do this, that would be so cool.

Houdini Learning Materials » Houdini nodes reference videos ?

I see this 1-node-1-video format in other communities. For example, Unreal Engine has this “wtf is…” [youtube.com] series. He covers a single node, talks about the properties, and shows an example file. All good stuff. Sidefx really needs a video library like this.

And Maya is a bad choice compared to Zbrush, according to people from a different camp.
I don't find the ‘most used app’ argument compelling. Network effects are powerful, but that doesn't mean the software is better. It's a hallmark for the average.
If you enjoy procedural modeling in Houdini, continue down that path.

@lkruel As a new (Houdini Indie) user, I'd like to see more on the basics of exporting (basic) content and getting it into UE4. For example, I'd like to test the new cloth sim in 4.16. A cube with a cape is all I need, but I feel like I have to learn all about rigging first. The same is true for velocity fields, as I feel I have to learn all about DOPs first. This may or may not be true, I simply don't know. Which is why I feel there is a need for a “Quickstart: Getting your content in UE4” video. A collection of ‘hello world’ examples about getting basic stuff into the game. That little bit of inertia would be a springboard for further exploration and would alleviate feelings of being overwhelmed. Does that make sense?

Thanks. I haven't tried anything yet, it's just a random thought at this point.
Basically, I've used CurveFloat assets with FTimeline in the past. I was thinking it might be neat to export them directly from Houdini. I suppose I could use python to export that anim curve data and load it up in UE4 somehow. It's all very fuzzy right now, but I might experiment with this.

UE4 has a CurveFloat asset type. You can use them with Timelines. Has anyone tried exporting animation curves from Houdini into CurveFloats in UE4?

I had 2 Dell XPS laptops in the past. Both died in ~1 year. Meanwhile, my Macbook lasted for nearly 10 years. As a developer, Macs are a good unix-based machine. However, Apple appears to have forgotten about developers and (if you believe Hacker News) a bit of a migration is underway. Microsoft, with its open source initiative, is making all the right moves. It now has a linux subsystem and the Surface computers are very nice.

The 2nd metadata node is to include the transform in the for-loop. Otherwise, it can't get the detail iteration attribute.
