Great insight in this thread.
I just want to add that there exists a really great tutorial on modeling with VEX that I found enormously helpful:
https://www.cgcircuit.com/tutorial/procedural-modeling-with-vex?utm_source=cgcircuit&utm_medium=website&utm_campaign=home-page [www.cgcircuit.com]
It's not for beginners but it's a great follow-on after you've gone through the learning paths outlined above. Each vex wrangle in the tutorial is concise and single-purpose as opposed to some vex tutorials that get very verbose and complex.

I'm still in the market for a quality Houdini shirt so I am hoping you guys can find a new vendor.
I ordered a shirt from the current store (spreadshirt) but the quality of what I got was bad enough that I didn't bother to try it on. The shirt itself feels as if someone took a scratchy washcloth and stretched it into shirt form. The design looks home-printed via a 90s-era inkjet. The shirt I ordered has only one color, Houdini orange, and it's off by a mile. It's rose-colored. I contacted the company for a refund and was ignored so I just had to deal with them via my credit card company.
I've attached a photo so people can at least judge the print quality for themselves.

I agree with harryabreu and the John Moncrief Introduction to Houdini course is the course I wish I had started with to learn Houdini.
Rohan's rocket tutorial was my actual first introduction to Houdini and it looked simple enough by the imagery but it was way over my head. It made no sense at all to me when I was completely unfamiliar with the Houdini interface or the Houdini way of doing things. After John Moncrief's tutorial, Rohan's was a great follow-up.
Didn't know LinkedIn had Houdini tutorials. That's interesting.

My machine also had Nahimic sound drivers (Product Version: 2.2.2801) and simply uninstalling those fixed my crashes with Qt5 versions of Houdini. It sounds like the newer versions don't have this problem so maybe I'll re-install this in the future when I am feeling brave.
I definitely wouldn't have found this issue without your help so big thanks to you Peter, @pbowmar
I'll send a note to tech support as well in case it helps someone else, at the very least my experience should help clarify that the older Nahimic drivers are an issue with Qt5 builds of Houdini.

Thanks for the detailed information Peter. Glad that you got it all working and it gives me some hope that I can resolve the issue without starting from scratch on my particular machine. Looking at the sound drivers is one thing I wouldn't have expected but I do have some uncommon audio components on my machine. I think I'll try removing the extra audio bits for now to see if it helps.
Thanks for the insight.

@pbowmar were you able to resolve this issue? I have the same problem. All Qt5 versions of Houdini crash on startup for me. All Qt4 versions of Houdini work fine. I've tried different graphics drivers and everything else I can think of but can't figure out how to get around this issue.

Thanks. This post was helpful. This confused me as well and I was wondering where my interface went. I didn't realize that Edit Parameter Interface only affects a particular instance of a digital asset.

Hi Vux,
The QT5 builds of Houdini all crash my machine so I have to use the QT4 builds.
I am not sure if too many others are affected by this issue and I certainly wouldn't want you to invest too much time into QT4 support if is a big time sink. If it's easy to support, though, it would be a nice thing to have.
3dsmax 2018 which uses QT5 as well doesn't crash for me and I run all kinds of GPU and CPU intensive tools without issue. I am kind of bummed I am still having issues with the QT5 builds of Houdini because I'd really like to move away from Autodesk completely.

Cool. I love the new low-poly features. Glad you are continuing to develop this tool.
I am currently using Flux 1.0 and it works well but it does not support QT4 so I can't use all of the Flux menus. I would love to see QT4 support for flux 2, it it is easy enough to do.
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Marc,
Good to know you are using a Wacom tablet as well. Most applications handle them quite well but there are always little quirks when companies don't account for them in testing; the more of us the better.
I can't say I have any real knowledge of the different UI frameworks . . . I suspect I could grow to love QT5 if it only worked on my machine. I can say that I feel pretty comfortable with the overall Houdini interface. It scales up nicely for 4k, the node editor works seamlessly, etc.
I did try several different video drivers, from different branches, with no luck and I tried using different cards to drive the display also with no success although having the different cards installed could still be an issue. I did offer SESI tech support that I'd be glad to give more info, test builds, etc.

Thanks Marc,
I wasn't aware of the QT4 builds and these DO work so the problem seems to be limited to only the QT5 builds. Thanks for the insight and I have to say that SESI has been great on the tech support side. For reference, here is the info on my current build. I suspect the QT5 issues might have something to do with me using an NVMe drive as my primary drive or my Wacom tablet since everything else in my system seems pretty common.
Computer setup:
Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit, build 1607
Samsung 950 Pro NVMe M.2 for OS drive
Intel Core i7-5960x processor
64GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti (for display)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (headless)
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (headless)
Display driver: 381.65
Display resolution: 3840 x 2160
Wacom tablet

I can run build 16.0.504.20 without issues. Newer builds like 16.0.557 and 16.0.578 are completely unstable, they crash just from trying to use the top menus of the interface; specifically the File and Assets menu.
I did file a bug report but wondering if anyone else is having similar issues or if there are ways to troubleshoot these kinds of problems. I am new to Houdini so I don't know what to try although I did try deleting the Houdini16.0 folder in documents and also deleting the houdini_temp directory. No luck with either of those.
Thanks for any insight.

I am just finishing the rocket tutorial myself. With no Houdini knowledge, I was hopelessly lost within seconds. I spent a few days just playing with Houdini unguided and that helped me with the basics of Houdini.
I then tried again to follow along with the tutorial, endlessly replaying several parts, often still missing very important details. For everything to work you have to catch many key bits of information that rocket by and aren't clearly narrated. Some of the node names and functions have changed with Houdini 16 and that added to the difficulty of following along although it's common to most every tutorial ever.
In the end I just mostly watched the videos and focused on understanding what he was doing while exploring the finished scenes he provides. That's a huge plus, being able to load the working files, since I wasn't going to be able to recreate them myself.
It definitely isn't beginner stuff but I feel like it was worth the money. It's almost as if he built the rocket in the most complicated way possible but it does a good job of dipping into many areas of the toolset.
