Shadesoforange I quite agree with you.
USD is developed by PIXAR and it is a new technology for all DCC like Houdini or any other software.
SideFX Houdini became a good example for how implement and use this new knowledge with Solaris.
SideFX all the time listen their customers but any development need time if any one watch the Solaris presentation on cert time of the presentation the beta tester representative told that Solaris have a great evolution to became more friendly for users.
I am a freelancer and I understand that I and all freelancer in the world have a chance to use a brilliant tool like Houdini and we have opportunity to have a edge technology in our hand.
Of course PDG and Solaris will be more friendly when the time came but let's give a chance to SideFx to breath in I was a little sad about character animation in Houdini and SideFX is giving to us KineFx one step after another SideFx have been improving Houdini but I started to asked some thing like this since Houdini 15.
Believe or not SideFx had interest on improve character animation I remember about SHED studio years ago had interest in to use Houdini for character animation but probably SideFx have a big road to implement some new tools in Houdini.
Solaris and PDG will became more and more friendly I believe in it but to code is not easy and take time to delivery a good and stable tool so big like Houdini.
Any way today is the day…let's see our new baby Houdini 18.5.
Let's go procedural.

My bet is that SideFX know about the issue about character animation.
If the character animation will not came in Houdini 18.5 in Houdini 19 probably we will see some good news.
But today is a party day let's waiting our new baby 18.5 ;-)

Hi Drasko Ivezic good morning from Brazil :-)
When I was a kid I loved a lot 2d animation I watched so much cartoon around year's 80.
To be honest on that time I never thought about character animation but some years ago I had contact with Maya 5 PLE and it change may life.
After It I start to learn a lot about computer graphic and what got may attention is to tell stories and I love to use characters.
The life change and I became CG instructor with some packages like Maya, Adobe, Blender and so on, I was a little bother about this software and I turned my attention to Houdini 15, since that time Houdini have improve a lot for character animation with good tutorials and great tools for character animation.
Today I'm waiting for Renderman XPU and started to study Motion Graphic inside Houdini, all the time I think about to use character animation in Houdini.
The problem is simple the character animation is some thing that demand a lot of work and training maybe it is my opinion but if I want to do it a lot of times I need a tool that can help to bring my vision to the light in a level that I can make money and help other people like may clients.
If am I wrong why a lot of people use Redshift3d, or Arnold Render and today Renderman? We Houdini users have Mantra and Mantra is very powerful.
It is true that we can change our vision to make what is possible like stop motion or maybe more simple animation.
But let's think a little why people use Maya for character animation and jump to Houdini to finish the FX Maya have a good tool set for FX.
I love Houdini so much all the SideFX team have my respect I never will spend may time to came here only to boring SideFX team or discourage other user to use Houdini no, I came here only to remember SideFX team that some user want to use Houdini to different things like character animation.
If I remember Houdini is a procedural animation tool and not a procedural FX tool.
Exactly right now I am writing some stories to make a short movie in Houdini with character of course ;-) but some things we need help from our developers in Houdini.
I tried to make some character animation in Houdini with the default characters and the respond time is not good…Ok I was back to Maya and make some tests…the respond time was good.
Yes I can use Flipbook in Houdini when I started animation in Maya I used to watched all the testes in Fcheck but I am a freelancer what I can finish in a good time put food in my table for this reason I wish that Houdini continue improve in a lot of areas but I can not stay here with my both feet.
Any way I still here ;-)

Hi N2e when I tried some character animation all character reaction became so much slow and all the time I need to use flipbook to check the animation…
Any deformation in a character face is very slow too.
I Know 3 packages one is Blender other is Maya and now a little about Houdini… no software is perfect simple modeling in Houdini is not good but of course in direct modeling Blender can help but if Houdini i so powerful in a lot of aspects for game and movie I missing some help in character animation.
But I start in Houdini 15 and step by step Houdini have been improved.
I complain about it only to remember SideFX that us character animation still love Houdini we only wait for a opportunity to jump in.
To make things in Maya and finishing in Houdini is a “mantra” but do more in Houdini will be better.
I and a lot of users complained about render some time ago and now we have Solaris and Karma… Ok now I think only one step more…(laughing).

Am I wrong or now Houdini is close to Katana?
Because if I saw correctly with Solaris(USD) we have a solid proxy mode and all features that was explained at presentation remember a lot of Katana but I am very new in Lookdev some one can give a mature opinion?

If I understood what is your goal… maybe Houdini is not a good tool for you… probably Blender will suite better you needs.

Technical Discussion » Is there any option in Mantra, to skip (existing) rendered frames?

Hi Masoud.
If I understood correctly you want to skip some frames?
If I am right it simple, when you “turn on” RENDER FRAME RANGE you will see START - END -INC normally INC is set to 1 if you put it set to 2 and it will drop 1 frame like this 1-3-5-7 etc or you can put “1.5” it is not a kidding you can use float.
If it is not what you looking for sorry :-)

Hi Masoud can you explain with more detail what is “a complete 3D software”?
Is a little difficult explain what Houdini is capable without some direction ;-)
After you tell to us a little bit more about what you want probably a lot of user can help you.
Can you use it as your main 3D software, without using MAYA, 3DSMAX or C4D? I mean Modeling, Texturing, Animating, Rigging, Material, Scene layout…
Hi Masoud let do it in small parts OK? ;-)
Maya is strong in character animation
C4D is very good to Motion Graphic in 3D
Blender is very capable to non organic modeling and cartoon with sculpting
Mari or Substance Painter for Texturing
Maya, Blender, Houdini can Rigging very well
Maya, Blender, Houdini can use material but Houdini is better in procedural Material
The Big Question is what you want to do and how much effort you will put in Houdini?
But a lot of people use Zbrush with Maya, a lot of people use Maya and Houdini and so on.
You can do a lot of work in Houdini if you use Houdini Indie.
If you have no budge my suggestion is Blender + Houdini + Substance Painter -> if you need more suitable render time + Redshift 3D or Octane Render.
My answer is not Yes or Not why? Simple because every tool have a place.
If you like character animation and have plan to use a lot of motion capture? Maybe Maya will be good for you.
But if you will do character animation with key frame and do not have hurry you can use Houdini and Mplay I tryed it and liked a lot.
The most important thing is to know what you want to do.
The SideFX is a company tha listen their costumers.
Houdini have became more and more friendely and powerful to be honest you can put more effort in different areas and it will be good to you.
Have a nice day.

Hi JabbaTheNut welcome to Houdini.
Houdini is a full DCC (digital content creation) to put it very simple Houdini stay side by side Maya and 3D Studio Max, Blender, Cinema 4D etc…
Houdini is capable to animate and rigging character, modeling cars and cities render and make simple composting.
To be honest if you will do a very small production I will recommend Blender to you this package is small powerful and it is free probably very god choose in a small budge.
But if you want to do big things with beautiful simulation like: Water, Fire, Muscle, Wind, Destruction, Motion Graphics, Crowds etc… WELCOME TO HOUDINI.
Let's understand the big difference in Maya and Houdini
Maya pro
- a lot o training
- nice tutorials for real beginners in 3D world
- better in character animation
- more responsive in 3d view port for animation
- a lot of plugins
- a very good render for realistic character in the box
- a friendly community
- a lot of good reference
Maya cons
- for small production it is expansive
- destructive way to work not good for little people in a teams.
- plugins need time to master and is an extra payment and can have bugs during some integration…
- your help (company's help) can be a little lazy
- (probably other user can appoint more issues)
Houdini pro
- a very good help (company's help) the better I ever see
- forgot plugins all you need is in the box
- modeling, render, lighting, animation, simulation all is procedure very good to small or big teams.
- a very nice community to help you
- a lot of videos to help you (not for real beginner in 3d)you need to knew something ;-)
- very powerful builtin render very close to Pixar RenderMan
Houdini cons
- To learn alone is not good (find a master to guide you)
- Different way to think (in the start scary you in the end you love it)
- For Houdini Indie you can buy a limited number of copies…
- The documentation is very hard to understand at first try (use videos tutorials and ask the community)
JabbaTheNut I am sorry for my poor English but if something is not clear you can make more questions here.
But if you talk more about what you want to do probably a lot of user can help your question.
Example if you want to make a movie like BAHUBALI or Galaxy Guardians or League Of Gods the community can understand your needs to help you and your team.
For all the three movies you can use Houdini and probably more movies too
No software is perfect all depends your effort but SideFX is a company that listen their user.
Until right now we don't have a very fast render…until there(Houdini 18??) you have some solution like Redshift 3D or GridMarkets to help your production.
Any way you are welcome to our community.
Whenever is possible we'll try to answer you question.

Hi Jsmack and Twod thank you very much your help are welcome.
My problem in fact is very simple.
I have an image in Comp1 in Houdini the only thing that I wish to do is control the opacity to make image transparent like any common layer in a image editor(such Photoshop)
Jsmack it is not a composition I want to do, like this I can not contro the opacity balance in a compostion because I have only one image.
Twod I tried LumakeyCOP it was near but I think not exactly it.
I know it do not help but exist a node in COP that can do it…I used to it long time ago but I can't remember.
Was a node that not need two nodes to operate I turn on an option and use a slide…I not remember what was the name or configuration.
To be more Challenging I not found the topic here on The Forum… but it exist.
I did some “Gambiarra”(this word in Brazil means - I did anything that work but not exactly the right thing)
But to make my students life easy I want to find that node.
